Cliff notes in 2nd post if being lazy....


All right guys, this will be my 2nd grow (1st on the net) and im needing alittle help....Last grow i just used CFL's, but im gonna step it up a notch this time.

I was shopping the other day and came across a couple of these for $10 apiece brand new at that....
Universal 150W 120/277V S55 High Pressure Sodium HPS Ballast
Model # 12210-241-C-TC

mine is just a little different...it has red writing and has MagneTek on the top left of the sticker instead of Universal Lighting Tech.......but it has the same model number and everything..i guess its just a newer/older model??
i think magneTek went out of bussiness??
anyone know of any problems, etc.? Ballast any good? any way to check it?


anyways....got to looking for lights at this same store (its like a mad house..shit everywere...merchandise store) so after digging for an hour rounding up those 4 ballasts i found (biggest ones they had)....but they did have about 15 100w MH and 150 flo ballast...but anyways....no 150W HPS bulbs to be found, only 250w and 400w (for $8)..but no damn ballast for them....

so i go to lowes b/c i figure a new bulb is cheaper then a ballast and i get thier and they have 2 selections for 150W HPS (figure that....only 1 for all other wattage haha)...

1st bulb is smaller, less lumens, less base temp, medium socket
2nd bulb is bigger, more lumens, more base temp, mogul socket

can someone explain the socket thing? one better/more efficient than the other?

both have same bulb temp....
the 2nd one is alot more round and would be harder to make a cooltube for one, but maybe disperse light better?

both were the exact same price and all...

only thing i can think of is that one is newer than the other by like a year or whatever and they just didnt sell them all?

if im missing something just let me know (think i read one might be dual arc tube? maybe both are).....which bulb do yall suggest? and why?

btw: gonna pick up another ballast (tot. 2) and get 2 bulbs, so if yall think that would matter on the bulb decision just let me know
-less space w/ the two smaller dimensioned ones, but i dunno??

also....gonna be a soil grow w/ mother plant and sog with some dank bagseed my buddy grew out and im gonna snag a clone for the mom...
might have to just go get that $10 35W MH (or maybe it was HPS) ballast for her..haha

haha...alright guys, i know that is was a little long winded post but their really isnt that many questions in it. i was alittle stoned while posting that last night...

mostly i just want an HPS guru to compare the two bulbs and tell me which one would be the best option to go with, becuase i have no clue as to if there is even any differences other than the dimensions and socket...

also just wanted to know the difference between to a mogul and medium socket base.....pros and cons of each if you can

Im new but ill take a swing at this since no one else seems to care. From what i understand a medium socket is for lower wattage lamps(house lamps), usualy rated for anything from 40w-600w, i have never seen one rated higher than that. The mogul i have seen rated up to 1500w and possibly higher(for security lights, larger applications). For 150w i would think the differnce is not much, with the only thing i can think of is the mogul would dissapate heat better due to its larger size and having more metal in it.
