Vegging Lights
permalink

I'm just at work thinking about my future setup, and I'm going to upgrade to a 600w HPS, but there's no way I could manage paying the extra cash for 1000w's, as that would be ideal, due to my flowering area being 20 square feet.

Now, for vegging, I have dual 40w fluoro tubes, @ 5000k and 80w of CFL's @ 6500k. No idea what the lumens would be right now, but would 160w be sufficient for seedlings and veg? I'm starting in an aquarium with the tubes on top and the CFL's along the sides. The area allows me to raise the tubes easily, so I could accomidate for vegging the plant.

After paying for the HPS, and building my flowering box, I won't have too much money for awhile, so if I need more lighting, they would have to be CFL's, as the sockets and 26w bulbs come to $10 each.

I would suggest getting more light if you plan to veg for more than a couple weeks, depending on the size of your grow space. If I understand correctly you will have 160 watts of fluoros for vegging, correct? Rule of thumb is 75w of fluoros per square foot.

How big is the are that you are planning to veg in?

How long do you plan to veg the plants for?

I'm going to need a lot of fluoro's to veg sufficiently, then. I was just planning on using an old 50g aquarium for veg, I think it would be around 8 square feet, but that's just limited to the tank. I was planning on letting them start in the tank with the fluoro's hanging right above, then as they grew, raising the light up. I might as well just get a Super Hortilux HPS bulb (wide spectrum), along with a standard one, so I can use both fluoro's and the HPS for vegging. That would be good, I hope.

i would suggest a small hps for veg. HPS lights lumen per watt ratio are very high a 70-75 watt hps puts out roughly 8k lumens if you take two 40 watt cfl thats 80 watts of power and roughly 4500 lumens. this is just my . I see too many people waste there time and money with cfls. -oeg
