First let me say this forum has given me great advice over the past couple years, some of you REALLY know what you're talking about.
Jumping right to the point...I've got a 4x4 closet to grow in with one plant in it, however I had planned to make clones in the future, the problem is that my plant is still growing up and not out. It hit 12" about a week ago, since then it's been on 12/12 lighting but hasn't really grown any new shoots. Nothing has changed in the soil, I've tried adding a little extra food...but it still looks like it's growing up more than out....what should I do?

Also I've been tinkering with the idea of cloning, I have some nice seeds, a bunch of trays, and planning on picking up a new light for them...any advice on this would also be extremely helpful...nutrients?humidity?type of light? and so on...Thanks Alot!

what stage is your plant at? because if your at a 12/12 your lookings to start growing bud more then anything. if you want to have it grow out more increase light time maybe 2 hours more and makre sure the lower leaves are getting the light they need. if your past flowering and growing bud then stay at a 12/12 but if your not then you should be on a 24/0 or 18/6 not 12/12 yet. hope i helped.

Is it grown from seed or is it a clone? If seed, 12" sounds a bit young/small to put it under 12/12. 18/6 or 24/0 is normally used during veg. To make shoots for taking clones, normally keep it in veg. Actively growing shoots seem to root much easier. To increase the number of side shoots topping or tieing the main shoot down will stimulate the production for more shoots. One indicator of maturity is alternating leaf nodes. If from seed, wait at least until it starts growing alternating nodes before 12/12 lighting. It's easier to root cuttings from a plant in veg. If it's a mature clone, switch to 24/0 until it switches to veg mode to make more shoots to take cuttings.

Apart of the very good advices from sgyh, its normal that the plant grow up more than out when you flip to 12/12.

Some strains tend to grow just small branches very close to the main stem. If you want take cuttings from them, tie the upper meristem (the tip of the plant) below those future cuttings, this induces them to grow up without following the main stem.

What they said.

If I may add, within the first few weeks of flowering you plant will also stretch. Some strains stretch considerably, some are minimal.

Hi Duner, Just in case there might be something that could come of it to further answer your questions, it would be helpful if you took a sec to complete the Nursery Questionnaire. Lots of variables can impact your plant's growth. Good luck!

Following up this thread I put my plant into 12/12 about a week ago now, it is starting to show new shoots, but is also noticebly starting to flower...it is definetley a female!!! Anyway my main problem remains, their are only about 8 leaves on the entire plant, it seems very sparse to bud, but it is already flowering...is it too late to go back on the lighting, or should I just ride this one out and hope for the best??

I agree with Itsystems, keep that baby in flower 'n see what you get, at the very least it will be a learning process.........

.....But might i suggest instead of topping the plant for more side growth, you pinch the main stem somewhere within an 1.5 to 2 inches from the top.....I never really liked topping, just me tho.....

Good luck 'N keep on Growin!

...Oh yeah, Welcome to GC.com!
