butter vs oil in brownies
permalink

So I've been reading the MJ cooking threads for about an hour now, I'm on my first plant that's going to be harvested in a few weeks and I don't want to waste the leaves.

I've been reading this post mainly https://www.gardenscure.com/420/mari...abutter-2.html

I've been trying to read threads so that I could answer my own question and not have to ask it on here because I'm sure they've been answered but I just can't seem to find the answers and I'm sure I'm just over looking things. My questions are,

I can't seem to find a thread about how to make marijuana vegetable oil, I've found a ton on butter but not oil. Is it ok to make the oil with leaves not buds?

I'm a little confused, why does everyone seem to be using MJ butter for brownies rather than MJ oil? when all the brownies mixes that come in a box that I have seen call for oil not butter?

my plant is pretty small, I'm not going to get a whole lot of leaves out of it. Is it still possible to make some nice brownies with not as many leaves?

and my last question,

should I use the leaves the day I trim them off the plant before It goes into harvest or should I wait? if I should wait, how long?

thank you

alleycat is the master of making THC'd oil.

I put dried bud (or leaves) in the crockpot & pour in oil - sorry, I never measure either - I just put in enough oil to saturate the . Then I put the crockpot on the low setting for 7 - 12 hours & strain the final results through cheesecloth.

I measure out the amount of oil needed for the brownies & store the rest to be used later.

butter is the oil. before you mix it with the brownie mix you heat it up until it basically liquefies and is essentially oil.

you can you just trim, I did with my last harvest. I would just cut the brownie recipe and mix in half if you dont come up with much trim.

oh ok, so if the recipe called for like 1/4 cup of vegetable oil I would use 1/4 cup of the melted butter?

yep crockpot is the best way to cook oil. no risk of burning

I wouldn't say butter is a replacement for oil. the taste is quite different. But you can use them interchangeably if you want to. (most of the time) Brownies seem to taste better with oil though.

I think oil making is the way for me, I'll have to borrow a crock pot.

so freshly cut leaves or leaves that have dried for a while?

usually i throw dried leaves in the blender blend them for awhile and then cook... I think with oil its important to use dried leaves. Water + hot oil makes for a bubbly overflowing mess.

psychoticore--You don't want to use butter in place of oil. I get tons of compliments on the brownies that are the pre-mixed kind and you only have to add eggs, water, and the oil. I like cooking my oil in the stove myself, but have used the crock pot way too. I just set my stove to 400 degrees, put about double the amount of oil for what the receipe calls for with smaller amounts, kind of depends how much trim you are using, for how much will get soaked up, but double will make sure you have enough for what the receipe calls for. You will lose some of the oil with it staying in the trim, so don't just use the amount the receipe calls for, or you'll come up short. I like to put as much trim into that oil as possible, by just covering it up with oil. If it calls for 1/2 cup of oil, shoot for 1 full cup, but 3/4ths cup will most likely get you by. If the amount of trim is limited and your not sure if you will have enough to fill 1 cup of oil, then use the 3/4ths cup to make it more potent without the extra 1/4 cup of oil. But still should be enough to get 1/2 cup oil from. My brownie mix calls for 1/2 cup oil. Depending how much trim you have, you might just put all you have in there, but the more, the more potent it will be. Don't put the oil into the oven until it is preheated, then turn it down to 200 degrees, and put the oil with trim into the oven covered. I use dried trim for cooking. I usually leave mine in the oven for 6-8 hours, stirring real good once an hour. After those hours I take it out and strain it thru cheesecloth inside my strainer. Once it's all thru, take the cheesecloth with all the remaining plant matter in it, and give a good squeeze to get the remainder, or what I can out of it. I store it in the fridge then in a canning jar until using it. Hope that helps.

SSo--I use the same techniques for cooking butter, but with butter I'll boil it off a few times on the stove over water to get some of the taste and color out of it. For boiling it off, after the inside the stove technique, I put the butter into a few quart cooking pan, and about double the amount of water, and set my stove at medium, which is 212 degrees on my stove. When it starts warming up, you'll see the nasty stuff you can skim from the top. Once it gets just boiling, I leave it for 5 minutes, then place into the fridge to harden the butter above the water in the pan. Once it's hard, I'll bust a little hole along the side, and drain the water, which will be green, and anything small that got thru the straining. I'll replace with clean water, and do it again and again. The boiling off on the stove isn't needed, but gives the butter a better taste, and not the dark green color. It won't be yellow, but not the dark green it started either. You can also check the underside of the hardened butter before re-boiling it, and anything that got thru the strainer, will collect on the bottom of the cold butter, just use a spoon or knife and scrape it off. To do that, once you drain the old water from the newly cold, and solid butter, just break it into pieces and turn over. I've also used hot water to get this off the bottom of the butter, but that is my lazy way, and lose butter too. I'm usually making big batches and putting into the freezer for later use. My pan I use, is really like a pot for cooking in, but putting pot in this reply might of confused you, so used the word pan, but mean cooking pot for cooking in and boiling it off. You can skip the boiling off part on top of the stove, but something I like to do. You need the 6-8 hours both ways to get the best results, some will say less hours, but the 1/2 hour to 2 hours seems way to short a time to me. The more time cooking, the more thc that will come off the plant matter, and connect to either the oil or butter. I've done this in the crock pot too, but the stove way for me seems to not smell up my house near as much, except when stirring.

Either way, the more trim/bud the more potent it will be. I happen to have a short intestine, and absorbtion in my system has to be very, very stong, so I'll usually put either my oil, or butter thru these techniques with 3 different batches of trim, most people that's way to strong for though. And most people don't enjoy it when it's way to strong for them. You'd be better off on the not strong enough, vs to strong for you. Can always eat 2 brownies if not strong enough, but if you eat one brownie to strong, I don't think you'll like it.

And with this, it's kind of a test and see how you like them, make some mental notes to if it was stong enough, or next time you wish them to be stonger, so either more trim, or doing it thru 2 batches. Most people just once thru, and as much trim into the oil or butter to just cover it, and you should be very pleased with your outcome. Even that can vary though depending on what one saves for trim, I use just the frosty leafs, no fan leafs, and have never had to use regular bud for my oil or butter.

Hope that helps you out, if not tell me what I explained that didn't seem understandable, and I'll try to give it with more explanation.

Happy Cooking
