regulating potency with cooking

Hello-

I am not much of a cooker, I far prefer smoking or vaping. However, I have a patient who is interested in some baked goods. I know the general concepts and have successfully made cookies, but I am always nervous that the effects will be too strong or not strong enough.

Also: for ideal medical delivery, which parts of the plant are best to use? I assume it is about the same as for bubblehash: you could use buds, but frosty trim is just as good, and large fan leaves are useless. Correct?

Is it a good rule of thumb that a "dose" = 2x what one would smoke? So if I want a cookie to be like smoking a quarter of a gram, I'd want a half gram in each cookie, so a recipe making 12 cookies would use 6 grams. Is this a fair guideline?

I've looked around a bit and will continue to do so, but if there is a good document about this, I would love a pointer to it.

Thanks!

Ola Chappie,
This all sounds about right.

are you making CannaButter first? or are you just mixing in the ground MMJ?
Also PLEASE warn anyone eatting that the effects come on slowly and builds for about 2 hours, many people have not had a good experiance when eating too much.

I use the alcohol extraction method then mix my hash oil with vegetable oil or butter, w/e my recipe calls for. As far as dosage goes I "eyeball" it. With a little bit of experience with the same product you get very good at gauging dosage. Personally I use the fan leaves because they add flavor when you vape. For cooking it really doesn't matter, though the THC contained(minimal) is also leeched with the alcohol.

The only way to actually keep track of how potent you make the butter is by using accurately weighed concentrates. Not everyone prefers to cook with this valuable commodity.

However, if you are just using green matter, I have one general credo: make it as strong as you can and have your patients adjust their dosage. Make sure they start out slow with 1/4 brownie/cookie (or other modular dessert unit) and avoid a bad time like EZ sez.

Thats how my patients prefer it.

In the video "Cooking with Marijuana-The Gourmet menu by Chef Hans" they recommend 1 gram per serving. so take the grams you are using and size your servings accordingly.

You might want to check out the video, do a torrent search for it...

Thanks everyone!

I'm leaning towards making cannabutter and then trying a few recipes with it.

I'd never unknowingly serve them... I have a longstanding practice of labeling things and have witnessed some terrible mishaps from people using concentrated material when they were expecting consumables.

I would turn it into butter. It can be stored for a while, and they themselves can see about how much they will use. They could bake it into things, or just spread it on something.

I like to eat mine with strawberry jam.

If your patients have a high tolerance your not going to make to strong of butter imo. If they are "beginers" they wont need much at all.
