- There are always a lot of questions by new members as to how the tier system and other perquisites work. I'm going to try to define them all here in this post. Tier System or Point System; a Tutorial ***Point Scale*** The following is the tier system: Under 10 reputation points = Sprout 10+ reputation points = Seedling 20+ reputation points = Novice Gardener 50+ points + 100+ posts + 30+ days registered = Junior Gardener 100+ points + 250+ posts + 60+ days registered = Gardener 250+ points + 500+ posts + 90+ days registered = Senior Gardener 400+ points + 1,000+ posts + 180+ days registered = Master Gardener 600+ points + 2000+ posts + 240+ days registered = Grand Master Gardener 800+ points + 5000+ posts + 365+ days registered = Ultimate Gardener 100+ posts + 30+ days registered = Avatar access. Master Gardeners on up can pick a custom title. (Non-offensive, within reason), and they will be able to enter and post in the exclusive Secret Garden. ***What is reputation?*** Reputation is a way to give/receive kudos to/from your peers: fellow growers, administration and moderators. It is designed to reward helpful information and/or advice. It takes a combination of time registered to the site, posting count, and reputation to advance within the tier system. The reputation that you have earned is displayed by total count in your user control panel at he top-right of your latest reputation received list, which is underneath your subscribed threads list (example below). You will see the last ten times or so you earned points, for which post you got them, the date and time you got them, and maybe a comment. More about that below. To the left of all this is a dot. Could be green could be grey. More about that below as well. The benefit of reputation is that it allows the new members to have a way to evaluate who we are and the value of the information we are giving them. Having a higher title by our name, and more green dots by our post count differentiate us from the noob with no experience. Not to say that the noob shouldn't be believed, but if there is a big difference in advice given, reputation is a tool to determine validity of said advice. Remember, your rep and your title are just a way to keep score. We're all doing our best for that warm fuzzy feeling it gives us to help our fellow growers. ![]() ***How to give reputation (points)*** There is a button top right on the post that you are reading. It is to the right of the number of the post, and left of the triangle warning sign. It looks like a scale It’s right here: Float your cursor over it and you will see this yellowish box which reads: add to ‘users’ reputation. Click on this button This could be sent empty and the rep would be anonymous. Just push the button that says Compliment buzzmobile with friendly reputation. (I chose buzz ‘cause he needs the points!) ![]() You could fill in a prop, and send it anonymously as well: You can use keystrokes to put in smilies if desired. Keystroke definitions for smilies provided on smiley page; to the right of the smiley i.e. = : lol : (no spaces between colons and letters)You may sign your name (or not). Note: smilies may not be put into rep dialog boxes by clicking on the smiley as you would on a normal post. Won’t work…. use keystrokes : nono : (no spaces between colons and letters)***How much rep can I give?*** When you're a newbie, you can give rep but it will appear as a gray dot in the receiver's rep list. The gray dot has no value other than the receiver being flattered that he received it. (and he/she will) Quote:
Once you have 100 posts and have attained 20 rep points, your rep (power to give) counts, and the dot you give will now be green. Since you have one dot, your giving power is one point.(changed to two) The amount of rep you have and are able give is based on this: At 100 posts and 20 points it is worth two points reputation given: For every 1000 posts, you receive one point giving power. For every 182 days registered, one point giving power. For every 500 points earned, one point giving power. ***How often can I give rep?*** You can give rep as often as you like however, You must give rep to at least 10 other people before you can give it to the same person again. ________________________ Last edited by milagro : 07-03-2007 at 07:43 AM.

Go out there and reward the helpful posters! *** Rating a Thread*** I got to thinking that while I have your attention I’d tell you about rating threads. It’s kind of like reputation for the thread. You can rate each thread with a star system from one to five stars. I haven’t been around that long but from what I understand it used to be more popular. Let’s bring it back. It only takes five votes to get the thread rated. Used to be more. It is a tool that tells us a thread is worth a read; at least it is according to our peers. It works like this: ***To Find a Rated Thread*** If you are looking around one of the forums for something to read, once in a while you’ll see a thread with some stars in the title bar; like this; The four stars on skitz’s thread tell you that it is probably very worthy of your attention. At the top of a rated thread is also a show of stars to show it’s rated, like this: ***How to Rate a Thread*** At the top of every unrated thread (the top post of the page only) right above the author’s join date, post count, and location is a rate threadbutton. (sorry for the color) Like this: When you click on it a drop down box appears with five options, from which you may choose. Here you can rate from one to five stars: _______________________ Last edited by bobbooty : 06-20-2008 at 06:42 PM.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | - ***The Thanks Button*** Holy Mackerel! There's even more rep to give! Here is another feature for giving rep to those worthy posts/posters. It is the THANKS button. It looks like an exclamation mark, and it is located on the bottom of every post (except the ones that you've written ), to the left of the QUOTE button; right here: When you give a post THANKS, it shows up on the bottom of the page you thanked; like this: No matter how much rep you're giving out, when you hit the THANKS button, you give that post ONE POINT. There is no limit as to how often or who-often you give THANKS to, but you can only THANK the same post once. Unlike the regular rep you give, you can take your THANKS back by clicking on REMOVE THANKS here: (it’s on the right side of the bottom box)"Why would anyone do that?" you ask. Well, maybe you changed your mind about the post once your buzz wore off , or, if you're like me....you might figure that THANKS isn't enough, and you want to give the post real rep too. If you THANK a post, and try to give the same post regular rep as well, you'll get a warning that says this: In which case, you REMOVE your THANKS, give the post real rep, then re-give the THANKS, both will take effect. (but the THANKS won't give the point) ![]() There are places you can see that the THANKS has taken effect; top right corner of your own posts (or others) will have this format: The topmost THANKS is how many the poster had given, the line underneath is self explanatory; it's how many THANKS the poster has received in how many posts. Also, within each member's profile, this can be found: Anyone can go back and find any and all THANKed posts for this member. Why give a post THANKS instead of rep? It could be you don't have time to give real rep. I don't know. Here's the way I see it. The THANKS button is a tool to show everybody what you think of a post while the regular rep is somewhat more personal. If I had my druthers, we'd have a laughter button too, just to push when something tickles your funnybone, but we don't so use the THANKS button. ![]() ![]() milagro _______________________
