Perlite and Vermiculite

I do not have access to either of these products. How necessary are they to growth? I know they keep the soil loose, but do they contribute any nutritional value? Can I use sand in their place? Thanks for any replies!

They hold water..

....you don't have access to any of these? What country do you live in?

Can you get peat moss?

Sand will make it loose, but will not hold the water.

and they help...

avoid soil compaction.

rice hulls work fine, too, but don't last as long as perlite or vermiculite. but rice hulls do turn into organic fertilizer.

ok, now you've got to tell us. where are you from?
