Here is my way of flushing. Works great. Give it a try; your plants will love you.

Shooter, it doesn't much matter as the amount of water completely fills the container with water everywhere. I do however move the cup just to help further prevent erosion.

I use all organic nutes my plants look very healthy... I don't see what flushing would do to them.. Could you give any advice on what to look for on when to flush and why. Just simply because your plants would love it doesn't seem like a good enough answer to just dump tons of water into them.. If its not broke why fix it? AnNy advice is appreciated..

To flush or not to flush, that is the question...

token420in03~ you raise an interesting point, and I am sure many good grows are accomplished without flushing the plants. However, it is a fact that plants grown in containers tend to accumulate salts on their roots which are leached out of the soil regardless of the source of the nutes. Flushing helps to dissolve these salts, thereby improving the plants ability to absorb nutes. In addition, when going from vegging nutes to flowering nutes, the flush will rinse the vegging nutes out of soil. Another good reason to flush.

So will your plants grow without flushing? Sure! Will they grow better with flushing? I think so!

Cap'n, thanx for the walkthrough on flushing. The concept makes sense. My only concern is flushing all that soil down my drain.
What I'm thinking of doing is having a catch-all bucket under the plant's bucket with really small holes that will allow the water to escape, but not the soil......hopefully, this will work.

My question though. Obviously after a flush the plants are fully moistened. When should I feed them again? After they dry out?

Soil and feeding

CR~

First, you probably won't lose very much soil from flushing unless you have huge holes in your buckets. I never have noticed any loss.

As to feeding, I feed with the last half gal of water in the sequence.

Good luck!

I'd just like to say that this thread is great. I've been intimidated about flushing my plants, and it's long overdue, but thanks to this thread, I'll flush 'em with confidence this weekend.
Thanks Captain!

Im not exactly sure if i understand one thing: Wont it drown the plants? Im so afraid ill do it wrong, and drown my babies that i havent done it yet.

So let me get this straight, lets just say for example i have a 3 gallon bucket. If i wanted to flush the plant, i would just run 9 gallons of water through it. Would i let the water overflow out of the bucket?

thanks -mike

No, don't let it overflow. It is my understanding that the 9 gallons must run through the bucket. If it looks like it's going to overflow, stop watering for a bit and let the water drain.

how the hell do you put 9 gallons in 3 gallons though? or do you mean to put a whole in the other end of the bucke, and let the water run through the bucket, to the other end of the whole, if this is the case, how exactly do i know that i have used 9 gallons?

sorry for my lack of understanding,

thanks for your patience =) -mike
