I was wondering if anyone else here had their own vermicompost. I love mine. I am currently working on building another one. I have found that they love banana peels and coffee grounds.

Good luck on your worm farm.

Hey Brindie -

I've been worm composting for many years, long before I started growing MJ. Most county extension serivces offer a very inexpensive worm bin that will last most of your life time. I've had one made of wood and a tier'd one of black plastic. When I lived in a big city the city offered a great deal on both compost bins and worm bins. They were interested in lowering the amount of garbage they had to pick up but also encouraging organic growing. I called the local "garbage people" and purchased a great compost bin for $45. that was sold at Smith & Hawkins for $125. Can't find a better deal than that and I'm still using it.

They are surprisingly odor free, and some people even have one under their sink for kitchen scraps.

Your homemade version is really cool Brindie.

In my use, all kitchen scraps (no meat or fat) go into my worm bin. Those red wigglers would eat that stuff up so fast that I never had a full bin. (mine was 18"W x 36"L x 15" Deep and made of plywood) Once I kept a bin for over 9 years and all I did was add to it, and once a year I'd use about 2/3 of it in my garden.

Seems to me that any organic grower would want to take advantage of using all those kitchen scraps.

Hey Sticky - the kind you are using is similar to the one offered by my garbage people. I liked being able to draw off the "tea" for watering house plants.

Hey Brindie - Once you have your worms acclimated to their new home, you can get rid of that cardboard. Just add the kitchen scraps and the worms will take care of it. It doesn't matter if you cover it or bury it or move the food scraps from place to place.
No need to do it once a week, just throw the stuff in there when ever you have it. It's a very very low maintenance thing.

Also if you want reach your goal of having a bin full every 2 months, you better start asking restaurants for their veggie scraps or you better have a huge family of people you're cooking for.

Peace -

Thanks for the tips, Outdoors!

My worms are producing castings s l o w l y but they seem healthy and happy and are not escaping, as I read they will do if conditions aren't right. I was thinking that I don't produce enough food for them. They go through fruit and vegetable scraps really quickly but egg shells just seem to sit there, even though they are supposed to be good for worms. I don't eat as many eggs as this pic would seem to indicate. I put some old straw in there for them to eat and also, since I don't drink coffee but coffee grounds are recommended, sprinkled some raw coffee in the straw. I thought about asking my neighbors for their kitchen scraps. What kind of restaurants should I go to? Maybe I could get rotten produce from grocery stores.

There is no unpleasant odor at all. I forget it's even there.

Here is one of the worms. They like to crawl up to the top sometimes where condensation collects.

Good idea! I don't see why not. Next time I sweep my flowering room I'll put it in the worm bin. Leaves should be good but I know from the experience of trying to compost stem material that it breaks down really slowly and would probably just sit there like the egg shells.

Starbucks is your friend

Brindie:

My local Starbucks always has grounds that they are getting rid of for free. In fact, they package it all up like packs of coffe for their customers and label it all ("Grounds for your garden"). You may want to check yours out even if you don't drink coffee (or even if you don't support the evil starbucks empire).

Around here the grounds go super fast (I get there @ 6:30 am, and it's a crapshoot whether the morning round is gone or not) but if you ask the barista nicely, I bet they won't have a problem with saving it for you.
