Mushroom compost
permalink

Just started my new grow, here is the final breakdown...

60% Soil. Used 50/50 mix of Peters pro and Sta-green nursery blend, both non-ferted. The Sta-green has some dolmite lime.

10% Perlite/vermiculite mix.

30% compost consisting of pretty much a 50/50 blend of worm castings and mushroom compost.

I actually bought the mushroom compost thinking it was compost made from mushrooms Come to find out it has chicken and horse crap in it.

I did a search and didn't find much at all on mushroom compost. Anyone try the stuff? Any luck with it??

mushroom compost is generally good stuff. The reason it's called mushroom compost is that it was used to grow mushrooms *in*, so it does indeed have some mushrooms in it. Or more specifically, it usually has mushroom mycelium in it, although sometimes I believe it is steamed to kill it all off so you don't sprout mushrooms.

Personally I've never used it but compost of any kind, provided it's not composed of herbicide-tainted materials, is good stuff. Both chicken and horse manure make wonderful compost for mj or any other plants.

I too am thinking of using mushroom compost since it is available for a very cheap price. What are its NPK ratios?

I don't know the exact ratios, but I would expect it is fairly low in nutrient value as the mushrooms will have extracted much of the available nutrients from the manure. It's still good stuff however, as there are plenty of other beneficial aspects to it.
