Cut the recommended dosage in half the first time you use it..... fish emulsion is very safe and generally will not burn tender plants, but some weed likes more nutes than others. Until you see how yours reacts, play it safe.
You could leave the whole gallon sitting around, but it smells really rank, so I just mix what I'll use the one time.
I would feed half strength every other watering, at least until the plant asks for more by yellowing lower leaves.

I've never seen any "go bad"- it just gets thicker and gooey-er (?!) and more difficult to pour out. So you just shake it up more to mix it.

Fish emulsion kicks serious butt... plants love the stuff, and its hard to over-fertalize I use it with bone meal (I dig holes and pour bone meal in, cuz its not water solubule) for really great looking plants.
I use organics, cuz I dont like the way chemical ferts taste (yes, I know.. flush your plants)... but thats just me. anyway.. good luck
