ash

my buddy has a farm and has a burning pile where he just burns scrap wood. I was wondering if i took soil from underneath, would it have too much nutrients for a plant. i dont know if i would start it in this soil but i was thinking for when i move into bigger pots.

i dont know if you can ever have too much ash in a soil but i had very bad experiences with non-organic ferts.

too much ash will raise your pH too high which will cause lockup. so Yes you can put too much ash in the soil. Generally it is suggested that you use ash from hard woods and not soft woods. I know ButterFlyDrems posted some good stuff at on point here and Organic has his chart you can look at in the grow guide. Ash is a good "part" of organic mix to control acidic levels but not as the only fert in the soil

Is a little charcole ash from the grill a bad thing, or should it not be used at all?

Charcoal ashes are full of toxic chemicals. Don't use them at all.
