How to have an Organic Experience
permalink

I am finally starting to use nutes on the soil. It has been about a month. I originally had Earthworm castings in my soil from the start. Now I have blood meal. How much is the right amount to add to plants in 3 gallon pots? I know I am supposed to add 1/4th strength to start. I started small today giving them only 1 beer cap full to each plant. So now the questions begin.

What are some good organics to use in correlation with each other... like bone meal/ fish emulsions?

Here is something I don't understand. If you are giving it say blood meal which I have is 12-0-0 and say you had fish emulsions which I think is 15-0-0 now if you added both would that be 27-0-0?? And if that works how much is too much nitrogen? Also if you are just adding nitrogen in that way why can't you use more blood meal?

I saw something called soda of nitrate. It had a very high amount of nitrogen.. is this any good?

How often should I fertilize and what is the best way to do it? Add the nutes to water, soil??

Thanks for all the help. the 400 watt will be here on monday and then I will have some pics up of them. The one we thought was gonna die has come back to life Thanks again

late,
KP

How does this sound for a tea. I plan on using it every other watering.

1 gallon distilled water
1 part blood meal
1 part fish emulsions
1 part earthworm castings

That would be for vegetative... Then Different for flowering. Does that sound okay enough?

One tablespoon per gallon is the usual dose for most organics. You can mix one tablespoon of blood meal into each gallon of soil, and also one tablespoon per gallon of water for tea.

Kelp goes with everything, and I highly recommend you get some. It doesn't have much NPK value (usually like .1-.1-1) but it has growth hormones and enzymes and plants just love it. It seems like I can see a difference almost immediately after foliar feeding kelp extract. I've used 3-4 tablespoons per gallon with no problems. You can also mix kelp meal into the soil, and/or add kelp extract to your other teas to be applied to the soil.

Bone meal is not water soluble and needs time to break down and become available to the plant, so it needs to be mixed into the soil at the beginning of the grow. Then its P will be available when the plants are flowering. Guano is a good organic P source that is water soluble, so you can make it into tea.

Fish emulsion is usually 5-1-1. It is an excellent first fert, providing everything a young plant needs. You would not want to mix blood meal with it because that would be too much N. Blood meal tea is better later in vegging and I've used it in early flowering too. You can mix fish emulsion with water and use it right away, but blood meal tea needs to sit in a warm place for a few days to a week first.

If you start out with the right, well-amended soil mix you shouldn't need to fertilize them much. Otherwise, every other or every third watering should be enough.

Distilled water is not a good idea because it has no minerals. If you're going to pay for water, reverse osmosis filtered is the best. Otherwise, you'll probably be just fine with tap water.

Thanks for the info Brindie. I am a little over 4 weeks in. I only added a tablespoon of blood meal to each then watered. I have not used distilled water yet. I actually use brita filtered water. Which i think would be just fine. is tea better? or straight blood meal? They sell stuff called blood and bone meal. Would this be a good one to use? and does anyone know how good soda of nitrate is? Is it even organic?

thanks
KP

You'll get more out of the blood meal if you brew it into tea first. This releases the nitrogen so the plants can use it. You can do it in a gallon jug with a lid so you won't smell it. Blood and bone meal is best mixed into the soil.

Nitrate of Soda, or Sodium Nitrate is a good source of nitrate nitrogen, but it is not organic. There's information on it in Delta's Raw Salts thread.
