![]() | A friend of mine has been growing for a few years now, and tells me that he's left his plants out for the first frost for the last 3 years. He claims the frost stresses the plants and kicks them into over-drive -- increases yield and potency. But what exactly IS the risk? Is the risk that frost will end the season, or is it worse than that? Does frost damage the smokability of the beautiful buds I've got already?

![]() | I guess the word is frost will freeze the roots and kill the plants, ending budding season, buds would still b smokable just an early harvest, but still it would piss me off just knowing that you could have had a couple of more days or weeks left for maturing buds, I herd that it wouldn't effect the potency, but I don't know for sure yet, thanks for the response Keep Smok'n, pep

![]() | cold weather can destroy a marijuana plant, but there is a way that u can use cold weather for your benifit. the plant cannibis sativa makes THC because this chemicle helps the plant survive in the cold weather. so if u allow the plants to stay out after the first frost, the plants will react by increasing the amount of THC in the plant, and im sure u know that this is a very, very good thing. but too much cold IS bad for a plant, so be sure to harvest soon after the first frost. good luck! matt

| Interesting theory about increasing THC potency with cold...If it's true the guys up in indoor grow would be really interested in that. If it is true watch them scramble to find a way to set a computer controlled mechanism to automatically release the proper quantity of pre made ice cubes directly int their hydro tanks when the temperature has risen above a certain level due to heat from their lamps. Those guys are the Rube Goldbergs of the Dope farming World! I LOVE YOU GUYZ! Problem with frost is simple. Ice crystalizes. Plants are mostly water, water freezes inside the plants cells, which are rigid and can only take so much stress, water crystals expand as they freeze, cell walls rupture, cell is destroyed. Plant sis dead. How this effects flower harvest. If bud is *damp* in that the cells making up the flowers are saturated with water, and then you get a HARD frost, your flowers will "shatter". Now I don't know if this shattered bud is harvestable, if it may be more or less potent. I do know that there is a mold that is quite fond of growing in wet bud that causes a pretty bad bronchiial infection ( you kow the one where you spit up amazing colors?)... I have a Mama's hunch it may be somehow connected to bud that was unable to be dried that was improperly cured wet. No proof...just a hunch. ANd I think the reason it didn't dry might be due to over dampness from rain or from frost damage. Don't know ...completely unscientific hypothesis. Personally... I'd keep one eye on the weather channel and one eye on the calendar and aim for the Harvest Moon (Oct. 2) ...assuming you haven't hit 50% red/orange hairs yet...but first sign of a Hard Frost, time to harvest. | S2 I guess they aren't hearing us... here it is again.... Your plants will survive the light frosts you are getting and will survive through to your 50%-60% red/orangey hairs that signal time to harvest. A HARD FROST meaning the ground and the plants are rock solid frozen is what we mean by a well, hard frost...which would freeze the water in your plants and do all the nasties ... As S2 pointed out the various natural salts and stuff mixed in the plant plasma will keep it from freezing if the temp dips below freezing before morning and then warms up during the day 9 Indian Summer)... So...wait as long as you can and hope your plant finishes before the HARD FORST hits ![]() Does that answer your question? | ||
