cheers for the help
i'll give that a go,
i planted a few today directly into the soil with out preping so i'll see what difference it makes.
The soil wasn't too clayey so i might be able to get away with it, but its better safe than sorry.
How big an effect to size does that clay have?

bgetting is starting to vegetate.
what kind of forest?

I assume it is a deciduous forest because of the clay soil, but if it is a conifer forest then you will be looking at other problems as well.
