Does the grade of soil you use even matter as long as you give them the nutrents they need at the right times??????? i bought soil for 1.50 per 40 pound bag.... should you invest alot more into better soil or just a few bucks into food?

![]() | i like to mix my own soils. i usually pay around $1.88 a piece for a 40lb bags of topsoil and composted cow manure. ive never had any problems with it except for when i dont feed. the thing that can get a bit pricey is the other additives like bone meal, blood meal, perlite, vermiculite, ect. but its well worth it IMO. i like to know exactly whats in my soil rather than buying some pre-mixed, pre-ferted potting soil.

| right behind lights, soil is second most important to the plant... if you get a really nice potting soil, you don't even need fertilizers for the first grow! i look at it like this: there really isn't any single fertilizer that gives you all the micronutrients - or even macros - that your plant needs. sure, you can use two or three different brands to get them all, but you're really asking for trouble... a good potting soil will fill in all those little gaps in the essential nutrients for you...so you don't have to worry about burning your plants...it's so much simpler and soooooo much safer. yes, get a decent, not pre-ferted potting soil. your plants will love you for it ![]() ![]() | ||

| I agree with Jose that spending extra on quality potting soil is the way to go unless you're going to do like REALTR33 (and I), go organic and really amend your soil well with things like compost, worm castings and multiple nutes (and lots of perlite of course). It won't save you money because of the price of the things you need to add. My topsoil costs 99 cents per 40 pound bag. ![]() | ||

![]() | I have paid 7 bucks for a 40 lb bag of organic mix...but what the hell, i dont feel like mixing all that stuff myself...I keep my car clean too, and would hate the idea of throwing bags of horse manure into the trunk.....
