Lightbulb Epsom Salts - A 2 in 1 Deal?
permalink

Well let me see here. Epsom Salts, MgSO4, has a Mg atom and a S atom... So how do they get away from the O4 they are bonded to? I just think it's interesting how the ions in the soil will claim the individual molecules to enable uptake. Or whatever the case really is. Been a long time since 11th grade. Covalent... Energy Level... Anion... *ouch* (ears shoot smoke and gear pieces)

Some mature persom will post a link to something really helpful, and I will look lazy. I should look for this stuff myself, but I get distracted by the internet!! Never can seem to find good info fast.

Epsom Salts seem to be beneficial to Foxfarmers. I know that this is a proven fact but I am aware of pH lockout. I think I see a Mg deficiency in the second half of flowering on NYCD clones. I'm in OF soil. I have hard water. Are there pH issues with this soil or is it a Mg lack I see? I know it has oyster shell in it for pH. It's the only problem left in my quest for perfect plants. Not a big deal but any input is welcome. Thanks!

I would look at your (hard)water before anything else. This will cause nute lock out(PH)problems faster than anything else.I use FF-OF soil and every other watering add a 1/2 teaspoon of epson salts to my mix. Some (white) varities use lots of MG. so for them I add a little more.Using bottled water will generaly be a better choice. In Phx.Az. they have R/o water outside of our supermarkets-25 cents per gallon if you provide the container.Sweeeeet!

I agree with Johnny - the hard water is more than likely the cause of your problem here.

I use FF dirt exclusively and have never had a pH issue in my life. It's gotta be the solution you're hitting them with and if you add for MgSO4 to media that already has enough Mg and S you will cause more problems.

I wrote a GrowFAQ entry about epsom salts. I strongly recommend you checkout the GrowFAQ for any questions you think may have been raised before.

Epsom salt should only be used when magnesium deficiency has been identified as a result of low levels of magnesium in the media.

It is important to know the pH of your media as well as your nutrient solution as magnesium deficiency most often manifests itself as a result of pH lockout; if the improper pH effectively stops Mg uptake immediately. Mg can also be locked out by excessive amounts of potassium and calcium (or too little calcium). If neither of these conditions exists, the cultivar needs more magnesium.
