Soil recommendations!

Hey,

I'm about to buy some soil today and was wondering what you guys had to recommend and highly not recommend (I know MG is one of them, are there others?) If I can't find the exact brand I'll try to find something similar though. Thanks

i went through this whole dilema and researched all about soil. my first grow i Tried the MG thing once and burned the hell out of my plants! never again. Stay away from soil that already has nutes in em'. You can even compost and recycel your garbage...doesn't that sound fun?! I'd go with a soilless mix however, either Promix, sunshine mix or similiar. You can make your own mix using perlite, peat moss, lime etc.., but if your lazy like me you can buy it in barrels of like 3.5 cubic feet pressed. It usually yields enoght for like 8, 3 gallon pots. Going with a soiless mix you can then add whatever nutes you want. Go look at local nurseries or in your area and they should have some.

Hey,

Thanks for the quick reply! From what I gather, I think I'm gonna look for a soil with perlite mixed in and buy addition perlite to coat the bottom of my pots. Does that sound good or is that too much perlite?

You can buy any good potting soil in a bag.
Then I would cut that with horticultural perlite somewhere betweend 30-40%. That will improve the drainage of the soil and your plants will be happy not to sit is soggy soil.

There really is no right way to grow, you have to resonate with a style and learn what you can,
tweak it to your own style and raise the bar each grow... OD '07

i use about 40% Happy Frog, 40% Light Warrior, and 20% Perlite for better drainage....i also put a layer a good sized rocks in the bottom of my buckets so soil doesnt go all the way down but the water does......this pretty much eliminates the chances of getting root-rot.........hope this helped in some way

Not at all, and in some cases it may improve the chances of getting root rot.

"Perched water table." As long as the media has good drainage (aka, lotsa perlite) and you don't water too frequently, there should be no problem.
