Thumbs up Watering Dynamics: by The Rev-Skunk Magazine

Here is a nice 3 page article in the new issue of Skunk on watering issues, that I found very informative and useful. I have employed the water x2 method, and have had great results. Check it out if you have not read it. Good stuff. I attached said article as 3 separate attachments in order below....

Chlorine: “A biocide made from chlorine and ammonia, making it very stable. It will not dissipate from bubbling or even boiling. Toxic to fish and amphibians- as well as microbial life - it can only be removed via carbon filtering.”

So even letting water stand for a long enough period will not dissipate chlorine, I need a filter? I thought once chlorine got exposed to oxygen it turned gaseous and will evaperate given enough time? That goes against what I’ve read in the past. Maybe Im missing something. Thats what I’ve been doing all along, letting my water sit for at least 2 days before watering or mixing any nutes with it.

Yeah I am of the same thinking as you. Maybe he means the only way to remove 100% is via carbon filtering.

Chlorine will evaporate. Chloramine will not.

ok cool. that article kinda lead me to believe otherwise. our city works site says so too, "chlorine only takes 6 hours to fully dissipate in an open container".

sprout is growing every day.sprout is growing every day.

There are many products sold for aquarium use that are specifically intended to remove chlorine, brand names include: Prime, AmQuel, AP Tap Water Conditioner, Aquasafe Plus, and many more. These all include Sodium Thiosulfate, which reacts with the chlorine (or the chlorine portion of the chloramine) to form harmless chloride ions. The chlorine is completely and totally removed. This reaction happens instantly. The tap water doesn't need to be mixed with the dechlorinator for any amount of time before adding it to the medium.

There is one potential problem if your water is treated with chloramine. As stated above, the dechlorinator reacts with the chlorine portion of the chloramine. The chlorine is eliminated, leaving the ammonia free in the water. This can lead to ammonia toxicity which causes stunted growth in your princesses.

Lucky for us, aquarium product companies have a solution. Many of the dechlorinator water conditioners include chemicals to convert the ammonia into harmless ammonium. Look a a few labels. My favorite one, Seachem Prime, states: "Removes chlorine, chloramine, and ammonia". Others that I'm sure handle the ammonia include Tetra "AquaSafe NH/CL Formula", Jungle's "ACE", Kordon's "AmQuel", and Kent's "Professional Ammonia Detox". If the label doesn't specifically mention that it neutralizes ammonia, then don't depend on it to safely treat water containing chloramines.

What happens to the sodium in that reaction?

Na2S2O3 + 4Cl2 + 5H2O --> 2NaHSO4 + 8HCl

which continues

Na2S2O3 + 2HCl --> 2NaCl +H2O + S + SO2

So you are left with table salt, water, elemental sulfur and sulfur dioxide.

Nasty! I'd avoid using Sodium Thiosulfate at all costs in gardening.

Why? Doesn't sodium thiosulfate break down in the water to sodium chloride, water,
sulfur and sulfate? More information can be found about sodium thiosulfate at the epa website, it does seem to have some positive attributes.

anyway, i'm off to kiss the girls goodnight...
