Isn't that why you don't dip clones directly into your gel container? Because it can contaminate it and make it go bad. At least, that is what I always thought.

HaHa! same here. i dipped in the container.. cause the botanicare "gel" is really watery. gel my ass!! also didnt store in the fridge. when i called botanicare and asked about the "gel" expiring she stated "its mostly sugar, so if its black or smelly it has spoiled"

UpNorth - you are exactly right! lol im a lazy fucker. and still pissed that when you buy botanicare what you get, and what it says on the label are always 2 different things.

Yup your right.. I just didnt know this 9 years ago

... If I have gel now, I just keep that top piece of insert paper that goes between the gel and the lid.. I shake it up and whatever is stuck on that paper insert lid I use.. Wash it off and your good-to-go for the next round..

.... Ive since changed to powders though.. Keeps the problems down for me..

do those brand x powders from wally world like rootone or shultz take root stuff work as well as any other cloning solution?

I use Stim Root #2 for semi hard wood.. I think I got this from a Rona.. Ive never tried the Schultz stuff though so I cant comment about that... But this Stim Root has lasted me 4 or so years and I still have half the bottle left

When I worked in a nursery I was lucky enough to do several experiments with cuttings. We propagated everything from Pachysandra terminalis to Pieris Japonica, to Hydrangea to black nest spruce. Luckily I was able to talk the owner into letting me buy 9 tyoes of cloning gel, powder, and liquid. We took 10,000 cuttings and did a 1000 each (with one as a control) and left to root in a custom mist house I built. Mist top to bottom, kind of cool. Anyway there were varying results. I found that Rootech gel was by far the best with only losing 3 cuttings. When I was all rooted and the project over, I decided to store these rooting hormones of various makes and models in a refrigerator that we had in the nursery till I was able to use them again. Well it was about 3 months later I had to clone some Euonymus and broke out the root juices. About half were totally stinky and crap. The powders were still fine, the liquid was fine after a good shake of the bottle. The gels were cooked, except Rootech, and Olivia’s. This was only 3 months! Well I definitely dipped straight into the containers, because I was doing a 1000 cuttings. Long story short, I still have that jar of Rootech, some 4-5 years later kind of like a souvenir and it’s still orange!! Refrigeration definitely works to prolong the life of the hormones, but the quality of the gel is also key.

I'll put in my

here and add that I used to use Rootone years ago when I first started growing and found most of powder would wipe off after sticking the clone into soil filled six packs and now my only rooting compound is a liquid called "Dip n Grow".
Store on shelf in my grow room and never seems to go bad .. it's always that yucky brownish yellow color prior to mixing with water. Maybe I should move it to the fridge?
Also, fill with water to the 10x dilution line on the measurement cup for semi-hard woods., sorry for using that term Luke hehehe
