I am trying to make my own soil mix to improve quality and save $$ over buying pro mix or foxfarm. I found bales of peat for sale year round at lowes. They have 2.2 cu ft bales for $7 and 3.8 cu ft bales for $11. (a 3.8 cu ft bale of promix is $40) So I bought a 2.2 cu ft bale of peat for starters. Next I bought a 25 lb bag of oil dry from Napa for $9. It is made from diatamaceous earth which is supposed to be better than perlite in several ways. Next I bought a 40 lb bag of pelletized lime for $4. (This would last me most of the rest of my life lol) The final ingredient for a basic seedling mix is wetting agent. This is where I am stumped. Does anyone have any suggestions for something "organic"?

![]() | I like pro mix BX for seedlings and clones. It has peat, perlite, vermiculite, lime, mycorrhizal, and wetting agent. I am willing to scrap the vermiculite and mycorrhizal. I love FF ocean forest for established clones but it is relatively expensive. To make my own version, I add Epsoma organic nutes (plant tone) to my basic peat/D.E. mix. Can water with Age Old liquid organic ferts to supplement. So I have all the bases covered to replace pro mix and FF except the wetting agent. I tried the soil without it and it is impossible to properly wet in a container.

![]() | In case anyone is following this, I found a promising solution for an organic wetting agent. The product is called Earth Juice Assist. It is derived from Yucca. So if the mix works, I should be able to make a batch of soil comparable to a 3.8 cu ft bale of Pro-Mix ($40) for about $20. Nothing to write home about but is worth it to me as pro-mix is not readily available here at all times of the year.
