PH and Epsom salts
permalink

well It's time to water again and so my soil's PH shot up to 8.

I know you can use epsom salts to provide magnesium but what about the 7SO4(sulfuric acid)? does that provide sulfur to the plant or significantly lower PH when used at safe levels?

I need a fast acting way to lower my PH safely. a flush maybe?

I could use some help here and won't water till I hear back from you guys.

I'm too familiar with soil but more so with hydro. As of now, it appears your soil is alkaline. I'm not familiar with how soil reacts because in hydro, a high PH means the plants want more nutrients because along with the skyrocketing PH, the PPM usually goes down. Sometimes both go up simaltaneously and that usually indicates something is in the resevoir that is altering the PH levels.

I'm guessing with soil you have a buildup of nutrients that is altering the properties of the soil, thus raising the PH. The best advice i could give is to flush it and go from there. Maybe post some pictures in the nursery of your plants so others can help.

if your going to use a nutrient to lower it, use some balanced nutrient. not just epsolm salt.

for example guano, blood and bone meal will lower it over time.

a flush will work best imo. can i ask how you measured your soil ph?

Mary Jane Humic Acid...
permalink

Hello,

I give my plants some humic acid and that always brings their ph down some. You could try some Fossil Fuel brand humic acid or maybe Liquid Karma with humic and fulvic acids. Just follow the directions on the product for application rates. I think liquid kelp seaweed products like MaxiCrop also mix up low in ph and might help in your situation. All of these things when used as directed are very beneficial for your soil and plant as well.

Good Luck!

I was using a probe type tester. I bought some PH strips and found out just how inaccurate the probe was. I then changed the soil from The cheapo mostly woodchip crap to a slightly better soil w/ guano chicken shit and guano in it mixed half and half with vermaculite. I adjusted the water PH and flushed untill the runoff had the proper reading.

Still waiting for the plants to recover from the shock but they seem to be responding well.

SO4 is sulphate and it is the ionic form of sulfur that is usable by the plant.

Epsom salt provides slightly more sulphate than it does magnesium and has a near neutral pH.

Your pH adjusted flush was the correct action to take.
