I've read that it seems to be disputable whether plants need this element, and not many fertilizers contain it. Do many people here supplement with it, and if so have you seen much improvement?

I use Protekt throughout the grow. It makes the plant more resilient, and makes buds denser. Good stuff, just add as specified on the bottle.

... I was told to stop feeding silicates at the onset of flower.

I can't recall exactly why ... but it was something along the lines of THC formation. A plant heavy in silica has a more difficult time producing the resin heads I think.

It was my local hydro store owner that told me this (he has a dual degree in chemistry and botany, so I trust his opinion). Anyone else ever hear this?

In all honesty ... I dropped silicate additives from my feeding routine. Given the possible negative side effects ... and never a noticeable difference ... I stopped using them a few years ago. I don't miss them

Hey Maven,

That is interesting...I have not heard that. I can't see how that could be, but if you find out let me know, I would be intrested in the details.

Tripps has used it. Says it strengthens up lanky skinny plants I believe.

edit: I recall it seeing on list of ingredients in PBP Bloom even.

I wonder if this is worth the price. ...I would think more users that use it or something similar would respond if its worth the price.

I also used it in hydro. Was a steroid for my plants and kept the ph stable. I will use it again in hydro soon. I have never tried it in soil. As far as in flower, I kept it going with great results...

Is it necessary...obviously not, tons of great grows have been achieved without it.

Does it help when everything is not entirely ideal (say temp or humidity)...I think so but don't have any real science behind that...just anecdotal evidence from growing in way too hot conditions this summer. I will also say it definitely helped some real stretchy plants stand up better.

Would I use it again...I think so. I am going to do a side by side with and without before too long and see formyownself if it makes a difference.

Adding it to a reservoir requires some thought though. If it is added to an acidic res (say pH 6) you can see precipitates form (white clouds)...do those clouds make it back into solution...I don't know, but I try to avoid them.
