Aren't chillers a new thing? How did people keep their reservoir temps under 70 before that when I read about air temps in the high 70's and 80's?

your guess would be as good as mine. Gardening is alot of brainstroming. Its a science so if it needs to be one way its not going to change because someone dosent own the item it needs. If the water needs to be chilly find anyway to keep it cold. Frozen water bottles? People come up with some crazy ideas. Lots of homemade shit. I dont know how old chillers are but i use a 1/4 horsepower to keep res temps low.

Maybe those people with 80 temp rooms are using Hygrozyme or Aquashield??

Temps above 85 holds little oxygen in the water and allows the plant to be more susceptible to rot root, wilts and fungus gnat attacks. Good luck! Think outside the box

Yeah but

It seems like people must have had gardens large enough that frozen water bottles wouldn't have been feasible, before chillers were around.

Yo.

I'm shaking out a new grow setup and my rez temps during early veg went into the high-70s before I did some temp control. Without Hygrozyme and Aquashield (I use both, more expensive but worth it to me), I would have a bunch of pythium-killed seedlings right now.

The new grow shakeout goes on, but it's going to be a while until I get my recirc setup rolling the way I want so temp issues may continue to be a problem. With Hygrozyme and Aquashield, I know I can get away with higher temps and still have successful grows until I finally get everything set the way I like and put in a chiller.

Aquarium chillers have been around quite a while! I can remember way back in the 80s, my grandfather used one to keep shrimp in a bait shop alive during the summer.

and back in the 80's almost all the large gardens were outside in the dirt. Indoor hydroponic growing wasnt even around until the late 80's or early 90's, much less on large scale.

There are other ways to keep your rez cool besides a chiller though

  • insulate your reservoir with reflectix to reflect radient heat and retain cold
  • get a bigger blower or an air conditioner for your growroom to lower ambient air temps
  • increase the size of your reservoir, locate it externally away from light sources.
  • Place reservoir on concrete blocks, or directly on concrete to suck away the heat
  • blow computer fans over the surface of the water to create evaporative cooling
  • locate your air pump in a cold place near the floor or outside the growroom

I would recommend all hydroponic methods keep their water below 70F. With aeroponics & DWC i would be inclined to say 65 F. With E&F & drip you can let it rise to maybe 74 F tops.

aeroponics is particularly important for cold temperatures. not only do you need to worry about water temps but you need to worry about air temps, because your roots are hanging in the air after all. If I had an aero system I'd keep my air temps 72 f on the nose.
