Working with hard well water
permalink

Hola folks,

Just had the well water tested, PH'd around 7.6 and 450 PPM, pretty high as far as tap goes. I know some of you are on wells/harder mountain water. Was just wondering what kind of hurdles this will present as far as PPM goes.. perhaps lighter dosing with feedings?

Last grow space the water was similarly hard with high PPM, ended up going with RO which presented some deficiencies and was an overall hassle lugging water up to my house. So I'm going to stick with what I got.. figure those extra minerals might do the girls good.

Any input is appreciated.

I had great success with the product from GH called Flora Micro 'hard water'....I use Pure Blend Pro now b/c the smoke tastes better and my water is not hard, but my yields were better with GH anyway.

Wow Siestam thanks for that. Didn't even know about Micro-Hard Water. Called the hydro store and turns out they have a gallon of that, so I'll exchange the regular for it tomorrow.

I suppose then with this adjusted Micro nutrient buildup/overfeeding won't be as big an issue. Would you think it'd be okay then to feed on schedule, or should I still adjust a bit for the high PPM in my water?

Hmm.. that actually sounds like a pretty good idea... at least cut the PPM in half. I'd prefer to just use my well water but if that 450 ppm will present issues even with using the hard-water version of Micro I can get my hands on some RO to mix.

My well water is almost identical, ph around 7.8, ppm around 450 ppm. I struggled quite a bit trying to work with it, I don't think the high doses of PH Down were helping me any, especially in soil and Hempy. I ended up getting an RO filter, tried straight RO, that wasn't the answer either. Now I use 1/3 well water, 2/3 RO, puts me at 150 ppm, and ph around 6.0, a lot closer to where I want to be. Hope this helps. General Hydroponics makes a Hard Water Micro, too, if you don't have access to RO and don't want to buy one, it helps when dealing with hard water. Hope this helps.

So Tripps.. I'm going to be grabbing up some Micro-Hard Water version tomorrow. It sounds like it helps with the PPM, I assume it wouldn't help with the high PH?

Another well water question.

What do you think the apropriate ppm should be? And if the water has a low ph...Does that mean anything. Mine comes in at 5.3ish. Do I have "soft" water? lol

I have no idea of my ppm. I never thought well water got that high. Makes me want to check it now.

Any place to send it for little cost?

Yeah I got mine tested at the local hydro store, though you can buy your own test kits.
