How often to Fert/Water
permalink

On a whim I tossed a few bag seed into a container outside this year and luckily i got a couple nice females now close to five feet tall. I never seperated the two girls ( I now call the twins) because of fear thier roots were bound up together. The container is about an 8 gallon size. I am a first time grower, and feel lucky that the plants are healthy now, and are both female. One started to show female flowers Sept 1st and the other a week later. If it helps I live in the temperate area of the Pacific Northwest where I am getting partly cloudy days with temps in the mid 60's to 70's. and lower 50's at night. I have found a 10-52-10 fert with trace minerals. My questions are how often should i water the plants...How often should I fert, and what dilution? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey there rklwgrwr!
Welcome aboard!

You want the soil to dry out between waterings.
Every 3-5 days is about average between waterings.
Water till you get about 10-20% run off through the drainage holes.

Quote:
How often should I fert
Every other watering.

what dilution
Start off at 1/4 strength and gradually work your way up to full strength, this way they don't get a blast all at once.

Follow package directions.

"One started to show female flowers Sept 1st and the other a week later."
Do you mean started to grow buds?

Around about the first/second week in Oct., water with plain water only.

Let your pots get kinda dry and heft them a few times so you get a sense of how much they weigh. Then heft them again when they're wet a few times for comparison. It's best to gague how much water there is by weight, because the top of soil can look dry when the bottom is not, and plants dont' like wet feet. It's especially true for plants outside. How often to water them is going to be a function of how warm/sunny it is and how much it rains. You don't want to blindly water them every other day or something and drown them.

As for ferts, indoors I fert every other watering. Outdoors in containers you'll just have to factor in how much it's rained since the last feeding. If it's really poured for a couple of days, then you might want to feed again within a week or so. You can also get to knwo how much your plants need to eat by looking at their color, stature, etc. Yellowing leaves are a sign of needing a little bit to eat. Crispy, curling, or otherwise necrotic leaves are common signs of overnuting.

Hope this helps

hey NFP, in the future make your own thread instead of hijacking another one.

bone meal is a phorphorous supplement. It is not water soluable so it must break down over time in soil mixtures and cannot be brewed into tea.

I think bone meal should be mixed into the soil at the final transplant just before flowering. I believe bone meal takes 2-3 weeks before the phosphor is available for nutrient uptake.

I personally use veg nutes until the stretch is over...

as far as rklwgrwr, I use the weight of the pots to detirmine when to water. As Alteredego suggested, every other watering is usually the way to go with feeding.

Sorry rklwgrwr, xenon, I wasnt sure where to ask this and didnt want to make a new thread for such I simple question next time I know better

I guess since I posted here the least i could do is answer your question. I now water about once a week, or if the plant starts to wilt as others have said. thats the time to get some water into her.
