Canoe Leaves and Seedling problems.
permalink

I've read threads about canoed leaves on this site before but i was wondering the causes and solutions for this. I'm new to growing and I'm dealing with this on one of my plants, i think the plant might be a little stressed also of the # of leaves on the new nodes...it started w/1 leaf on the first node, then another 1 leaf, then 3, and 3(as opposed to 5 per leaf like it should be) again and were on that node right now...and the canoing just started as the first set of 3 leaves developed. I checked the ph I remember it being slightly acidic but I'm not very familiar with marijuanas optimal ph (like i said I'm new).

My second problem comes in on starting seedlings...the last batch of 5 only 3 germinated in the paper towel, I planted them in wet starter soil in a 2 liter bottle cut in about 1/4...and put it under hps (now mh just got that bulb today ) with a piece of plastic wrap over top. They sprouted very quickly and then 2 two toppled over from the small stem and the weight of the still attached seed on top, I never got them back to life after that...the third one that did make it eventually dropped it's seed and i removed the plastic wrap but didnt transplant...and that one died quickly i think the translucent 2 liter bottle made the soil dry out way to quickly but thats my guess...and i think the weak stem problem maybe i just planted them too shallow in the soil...but any help @ all would be greatly appreciated...ty

I'm moving this over to the Nursery, where problems with sick plants are discussed.

If you can show us photos of the plant & complete The Nursery Quesionnaire to help us help you, that wouls be a big help.

Usually leaves shaped like a taco, or canoe, are a sign of a magnesium deficiency. But seedlings usually derive adequate food from the cotyledons (the first rounded leaves).

I stick my seedlings under a CFL for the first week or two, then put them under a HID.

Little info to say for sure, but its probably too hot for your young ladies. The first week is easier to do with CFLs; HID lamps maybe too powerfull for young plants.

Can someone point me towards a site that could teach me about correct fertilization, I'm not quite sure how often I should be doing it, and should I be rotating different ferts, I know some are good in certain stages, I've only bought fish fert right now but I'm getting bat guano and worm castings tomorrow, and i was thinking about blood meal, HELP Plz. Ty -420247

Soil Growers:
1. Are you growing from seed or clones? Seeds
2. How old are your plants? 2 weeks
3. How tall are your plants? I'm trying out lst'in w/my Afgan, and just tryin to grow the snowberry(the one i'm having problems with) to be a mother and make clones, the Afgan is about 9 inches and the sb is about 7.
4. What size containers are they planted in? They are in their final home, round pots holds 17 quarts i think it said..
5. What is your soil mix? For these first two I'm just using maricle gro, i got my Ocean forest ff yesterday for my next batch
6. How often do you water and what type of water do you use? I leave tap water out overnight...I've been tryin to give them a little less water than i feel they should have just because the biggest and most common mistake a beginner can make i hear is overwatering, I also picked up a 3in1 ph/moisture/light monitor yesterday, it said my plants are dry at the bottom so maybe im not watering them enough..
7. What is the pH of your water?
8. What kind of fertilizer do you use and what is its NPK ratio? Fish Fert. (2-4-1) only so far, pickin up some worm casting and/or bat guano tommarow.
9. Do you foliar feed or spray your plants with anything? No
10. What kind of lights do you use and how many watts combined? my main light is hps ballast w/hps bulb or mh depending on wat cycle im in they are on the two bigger plants next to the plants was my miniature green house with the seedlings and the 12inch fluorescents over them.
11. How close are your lights to the plants? I'd say about a foot and a half from the mh bulb.
12. What size is your grow space in square feet? I'd say about a 6x6 space but i have foil up around the pots and light to help reflect it to my two I have up right now..
13. What is the temperature and humidity in your grow space? 82 degrees, I cant measure the humidity yet
14. What is the pH of the soil? 7.0-6.5ish
15. Have you noticed any insect activity in your grow space? None
16. How much experience do you have growing? little to none but i have read a ton and am learning more and more everyday..

Whats optimal temp. for the seedling stage? i thought hotter was better for them....

The first pick is the one I'm having problems with, the 2nd is cooperating, and the 3rd pick is where i have my seedlings now under two 12in. fluorescents, they are in 1/4 2l soda bottles covered with plastic warp... I'm hoping this will work, any times would be greatly appreciated.

Well, for the seedlings, I don't think the hotter the better.
I might keep a close eye on the seedlings, b/c w/ that plastic wrap over the cups you are using, they do not get any airflow. This makes them have no structural strength, making them fall over.
I myself have never used plastic wrap, and have popped 99.97% of the seeds I have planted.
Some people are into it, but I am telling you it is unnecessary most of the time. I can not think of another grower I know personally who uses that method, fwiw.

How OFTEN do you water them?

How many WATTS is your light(s)?

Miracle Gro sucks, 82 degrees may be a bit warm, and get worm castings before bat guano, IMO.

well the plant in the middle pic looks fine. The one in the first pic look slike nute burn. I really hate Miracle Grow preferted soils. You get hot spots in your soil and there's nto a damn thing you can do about it besides transplanting into better soil. Keep your temps int he mid 70's.
Also, when you water water til water runs out of the bottom of the pot. Then let them dry out before you water again.
