Check the pH of your run-off, too. If it's way off you'll want to flush your soil. Use double the amount of water the pot can hold (so if it's a 5 gal bucket, run 10 gal of water through it to flush).

Of course that's a guideline. You want to flush until the run-off is the same pH as the water going in.
