Mary Jane Earwig remedy anyone?!
permalink

Despite my best efforts to keep the little buggars out of my grow room - i can't figure out where the heck they are coming from - and the little demons will actually run from me by diving into my netpots full of happy crazy rooting 2 week seedlings - so i can't just empty it out completely - and then i can't find them -

tonight - i walked in the room - the earwig is eating a leaf- as i approach it, he dives into the grorocs and disappears - i sat silently for 20 minutes waiting for him to emerge so i could murder him!!!! he was obviously on to me i tried to move the rocks around the best i could without hurting my baby plants - but still couldn't find the demon!

i'm at my wits end - i even tried to line the perimeter of my reservoir with double sided tape thinking if they might get stuck and not make it in -

I have 4 cats, and though i try my VERY best to keep them OUT of the grow room completely I am a paranoid freak about poisoning them - so any suggestions that don't involve a lot of chemicals would be helpful .....

please help me - i haven't smoked chronic in weeks, so i'm already crabby - i'm trying to grow my own so i will have it when i want it - and not have to be without days like today - and i'm especially irritable - the earwigs are really upsetting me!!

Earwigs:
For earwigs we carry: 1600 X-Clude, Diatomaceous Earth, Rotenone/Pyrethrum Spray

Earwigs in general can be considered an ally in the garden as they will eat aphids, insect larvae, snails, and other slow moving bugs. and other pests at night as they are nocturnal. One truly good function of the insect is they eat the eggs of the codling moth which is a serious problem with apple trees. When you have an over population of earwigs they can become a nuisance. Generally they will feed on your marigolds and they really go for clematis vines, dahlias, delphiniums, pansies and chrysanthemums. They cause the most trouble June through October.

* A favored control method is spreading diatomaceous earth where they are apt to crawl. Make applications in late spring about a week apart, and treat the soil around the foundations of houses, along walks, fences, and around trees. Botanical insecticides should be used as spot treatments or crack and crevice sprays.
* One possible control in dealing with earwigs is to mix insecticide soap with isopropyl alcohol and spray the infested area every two to three days for two weeks. To make this spray add 1 tablespoon of the alcohol to each quart of insecticide soap.
* Another method is to trap earwigs in pieces of old hose or rolled up newspapers. Check these during day and shake the insects into a bucket of soapy water.
* A very successful method to get rid of earwigs is to take a shallow, straight-sided container and fill it half full with vegetable oil. Clean out the bodies every day and you may reuse the oil as often as you like. We have found that this works particularly well in a greenhouse situation.
* Here's another trap mixture: 1 tbsp vegetable oil, 1 tbsp molasses, 1 tbsp dry yeast, 8 ozs water. Mix all the ingredients well and place in a small plastic container (like a cottage cheese container). Bury the container to ground level. Clean it out as needed.
Taken from Natural Insect Control

good luck

i know the feeling of being dry and irritable. life shouldn't bring you down.

and earwigs can easily be remedied..if you buy some Borax which contains
boron.. and heavily dilute it... you can even water your soil with a light borax water solution. boric acid
will kill them but it has to be applied directly to the earwig.. so trap them first
and use the boron water solution..its natural and safer than heavy duty chemicals.

boron works well to get rid of ants and other insects too. don't resort to using
boron unless its an infestation , which it sounds like it is in this case.

as earwigs can be good for the garden in small numbers.

if you can prevent overwatering its a good idea because cannabis doesnt need
tons of water and its the cool damp areas earwigs love.

that being said..letting the soil dry out a bit longer might also help to curb the problem
and apply dried boron to all their known moist habitats.

thanks for the suggestion - so i can put a little borax in my soil - but actually my biggest problem is the earwigs that are eating my hydro plants ..... (i'm growing in both mediums to test what i prefer)

so should i spread some borax on the floor?! this scares me because of my cats! I have my grow room in my basement - and i can only imagine the little beasts are coming in my little basement windows i have in that room - i was thinking about sealing them off with some kind of plastic and hot glue or something to make a seal -

should/could i spread borax outside my house, like outside the basement windows?!

i'm interested in this diatomaceaous earth - but I can't find a place to purchase it except for online - and i was trying to get it sooner than later- i might just need to order it online!!

You could always find it at a pool supply store. They use it to clean the pool filters.

it was my understanding that the stuff used for pool filters was heat treated or something in some way and wasn't going to work for killing/keeping away the Earwigs - was i misled?

You are correct that pool filter DE is not suitable for insect control. The heat treatment changes the silica crystal content of the DE which makes it hazardous to humans if the dust is breathed.

i have never tried it directly in soil myself.. but it doesnt harm the plant it actually is used
to cure boron deficiencies as well as insect control. just make sure you dilute it if your going to use it on soil.

they actually sell liquified ant killer or boric acid.. i imagine it works for earwigs as well if applied directly to the earwig and their dwelling.

I wouldn't put the borax powder in your house around your cats..but in areas where it wont be easily disturbed like the basement corners or grow room corners in this case.. it should be fine. Outside you can apply it to cracks, anthills as well as earwig dwellings.

nursery or landscape suppliers should carry it.

well i went out and got some of the liquified ant killer, but due to paranoia about the cats getting in there, i couldn't just spread it around - so i bought little traps - and i'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad i did! about 3 days later, i started to have a bit of an ant problem - i put the little traps where they were coming in, and i had to throw the traps away each day they were filling up with ants!! the ants obviously got the picture and are leaving me alone now! but the earwigs also seemed to be interested in the ant killer and crawl into those traps as well!

Also, I ended up purchasing some food grade diatomacious earth (i figured if you could eat it, it wouldn't kill my precious kittys) - and i've since spread it all around the perimeter of my house! - makes me wonder, if i didn't have a grow room in my basement, would i have discovered my insect invaders coming into my house so quickly?! probably not! so thanks to mary jane, i've saved myself from months of having the creepy crawlys trying to figure out where the damn bugs are coming from! LoL - i just bought my house last fall, so this is my first summer dealing with invaders!
