Tiny grey and black bugs with 2 antennas in my hempy mix
permalink

Title pretty much sums it up.

I am doing a 100% perlite Hempy bucket grow.

4 weeks in and plants range from 12" - 15"

I found tiny, tiny grey /black bugs on the lips of my pots. They have 2 antennas each. I looked under the leafs and didn't find any. Its just in the perlite and around the lip of the bucket.

I don't have a camera with the zooming capabilities to take a picture. As far as I can tell they cannot fly.

Any help?

Sounds like it could be springtails.

Springtails are also easy to get rid of. Simply let the pot go dry and they should magically disappear. If they don't (and are annoying) try spraying the soil surface with a pyrethrin based insecticide. I recently discovered one with the delightful name of Doktor Doom. Made by a company in Alberta, this product contains the highest pyrethrin concentration of any plant spray of its type in Canada and also works pretty well on aphids and whitefly.

I have 9 x 3 liter hempy pots sitting in a 2x4 rez.

Until today I just let the run off water from the hempys sit in the bottom of the rez, I guess that is whats causing the springtails. They like water and humid conditions.

Apparently the are harmless and are a sign of healthy roots

That's as good a way to waste time and material as any.

What should I do?

I was following this:
