Leaf curling with OF soil?
permalink

First thing first - sorry if it is bad form to start another leaf curling thread when there is another active one going. Not sure if I should have one for my particular case, or add on to the previous one....

I have several (7) plants going now that are 2 to 2.5 weeks old. They all sprouted in jiffy pellets, and were then moved to cups. 4 of them went into small cups, and 3 went into good size plastic (20 oz?) cups. About a week ago, I transplanted the ones in smaller cups up to the 20oz size cups. All of the soil that was added was OF with no additional nutes.

Over the last several days, i've noticed the leaves beginning to curl a bit. Can this be attributed to the roots spreading into the nice rich OF soil and maybe just getting a little more goodness than the little plants need? Like I said, I haven't added anything to them yet. One thing that is also throwing me off a bit, it that the cotyledons on my two most robust plants are just beginning to yellow a bit, which would indicate that they are ready for some food.

I've only watered the plants 3 times in total, although the last watering was a good soaking after moving them into bigger cups. Temps have been steady between 78-82 with humidity right at 50%.

I know pics will be helpful - I'll get some up a bit later today. Any thoughts in the meantime?

Many thanks!

leaf curling for your young plants would only be concerning depending on degree of curl. If what looks like the problem started after you transplanted I would monitor closely to see if it becomes worse or the curling remains the same. If the curling remains the same I think you will be fine if you just ride it out using only pH balanced water / no nutes until new growth shows normal signs. If it doesn't get better and curling becomes yellowing/crispy leaf tips then maybe some corrective actions need to be taken

Thanks for your reply, g13laze. Here is a pic from a few hours ago. It seems that all of my plants have a little of this going on to varying degrees. Not too bad, just trying to learn what's up and eventually graduate from 'newb' status

Oh yes, and the questions :

1. Are you growing from seed or clones? Seeds
2. How old are your plants? 2 - 2.5 weeks
3. How tall are your plants? 4 - 4.5 inches or so
4. What size containers are they planted in? 20 oz. plastic cups
5. What is your soil mix? jiffy pellets transplanted into OF soil
6. How often do you water and what type of water do you use? only 3 times so far, tap water
7. What is the pH of your water? no idea (/ducks....)
8. What kind of fertilizer do you use and what is its NPK ratio? none so far
9. Do you foliar feed or spray your plants with anything? nope
10. What kind of lights do you use and how many watts combined? (HPS, MH, fluorescent, halogen, incandescent "plant lights") Currently under 2 3' t5's
11. How close are your lights to the plants? 2ish inches away
12. What size is your grow space in square feet? 12ish
13. What is the temperature and humidity in your grow space? 78-82 degrees, 50% rh
14. What is the pH of the soil? no idea (buying a ph meter this week)
15. Have you noticed any insect activity in your grow space? none
16. How much experience do you have growing? I found an mj plant growing in my front flower bed a few years ago, put it in a pot and managed not to kill it. that's about it

2 inches may be a touch close on the T5's. Maybe pull the light back a couple inches until the plant comes back around.

Gave the bunch a drink today, and raised the lights a couple of inches. Hopefully that will straighten things out
