Dwarfs
permalink

I have a dwarf issue. I planted 3 beans in early August, and they are still only about 2" high (yes, you read that right; 2 inches). I had to travel for over 2 weeks within days of sprouting and I don't think that my caretaker took very good care of them during that very vulnerable time in their lives which has stunted them terribly.

I finally gave up on waiting for them to outgrow their 16 oz cups and put them in fresh 5 gallon buckets of FFOF with more added perlite. They hadn't made any progress now in ~ 6 weeks so I figured that a change might be good for them. Best case scenario is that they do just fine. Worst case is that they are no worse off then they are right now.

What are their chances of making a full recovery and blossoming into the fine plants they should be (all 3 are from fine genetic lines - BF Blue Cheese, BF G13 x Haze, Ice Cream)? Am I wasting my time on these dwarfs at this point? I'm already 6 weeks behind with them and don't really feel like wasting any more time considering my current stash has but 1 bud left. That said, I'd really hate to throw away $50 worth of beans before exhausting every option.

Any suggestions as to where I might go from here?

No I don't. I can get some. But until I am able to get some pics, imagine what 6 or 8 day old seedlings might look like, plus a bit of yellowing and some brown/dead leaves (the"largest" plant has 3 or 4 nodes and the bottom 1 or 2 have already yellowed and died). I'm sure they need some nutes, but I imagine that the fresh transplant into FFOF should take care of their immediate needs. I don't want to overdo it. The transplant + new nutes might be too much for these little guys. They look savable, I'm just not sure.

Next time I venture to the grow room, I'll snap a couple of pics.

I could only get 1 pic that was worth anything at all, but all 3 look essentially the same. It does seem, however, that they have perked up a bit since the transplant (though I could just as easily be imagining it out of sheer hope as well).

As a refresher for those just joining us . . .

I planted 3 beans in early August then had to leave the country a few days later. Caretaker did a shitty job during that time and they never seemed to recover. I let them stay in their 16 oz cups filled with FF Light Warrior for ~5 weeks hoping that they might catch on and grow some, but they simply never did. Today I transplanted them to 5 gallon buckets of FFOF hoping that the extra space and nutes might do the trick.

Currently they are in FFOF with added perlite under a 600w HPS. Temps are manageable (mid 70s - low 80s), though humidity is low (30s). I have never given them anything stronger than a kelp spray (which is pretty tame). I'm hoping that this will help them along to recovery, though I may also plant another bean or 2 so as to not waste any more time (5 weeks in and I still have at least 11 to go because of how badly they've delayed, and that's if they grow as they should from today onwards which seems unlikely).

UPDATE: All is well with the world

After the transplant to a 5 gal pot with FFOF and some added perlite, all 3 have made quick strides towards being the good girls I was hoping for.

I still wonder why they never took off to begin with while in their 16oz cups. They had good soil, FF Light Warrior, but just never got any bigger than 2".

That plant needs nitrogen pronto. Once you get some nice green leaves I expect growth will really pick up.

I agree it looks hungry for some nutes.

It may or may not be a dwarf, but I think that still has to be determined. I think this may recover. Partly because it looks hungry and also partly because it seems to of had some growth a few nodes back.

By the time these pics were taken it certainly needed nutes, but I'm wondering why they never grew to begin with when planted in good soil (FF Light Warrior) which should have been enough to get them a very good start (which they never got). These plants were 5 weeks old when the pic was taken.

They have been transplanted into 5 gal pots with some FFOF soil with added perlite and all is well.

I think the pc term is "little plants".

I've had problems with runts before, but they never made it to adulthood no matter what I did to them. Glad to hear they are starting to pick up...
