Question Unidentified plant problem - please help
permalink

I am having the following problem with some flowering plants. They are about 4 weeks into flowering and most are having this issue (but not all).

I have a mixed bag of strains in this group (which doesn't help my case I know).

I have also have a spider mite infestation which is slowly coming under control, but may be a secondary or even primary cause of the issue.

PROBLEM
Buds are forming very small or very loose. The tops where bit colas would usually go are spitting out these rubbery large 2 or 3 prong leaves (which would be growing into dense buds, but are giving me these instead).

The buds that are produced are turning brown early (at 5 of 9 weeks) and look to not be getting any bigger

Soil Growers:
1. Are you growing from seed or clones? clones - various strains

2. How old are your plants? - 4-6 weeks into flower (different ones are different ages)

3. How tall are your plants? 3-4 feet with a few being bigger

4. What size containers are they planted in? 1 gallon and 2 gallon (smaller ones in 1 gallon)

5. What is your soil mix? 3/4 sunshine 4, 1/4 clay pellets

6. How often do you water and what type of water do you use? using RO water with flowering nutes. Plants are in pots on a flood drain table watered 3x daily during light hours

7. What is the pH of your water? about 6.5

8. What kind of fertilizer do you use and what is its NPK ratio? I use a 2 part growing system--let's grow A, let's grow B and I add B1. I do not know NPK off hand. I also put a bud booster (high P) in at week 3 a few weeks ago.

I flush with just RO water for the last 10 days.

To be honest given I ran out of food one week and was away one week, I can say the plants have had irregular flower feeding compared to my past successful batches.

9. Do you foliar feed or spray your plants with anything? I do not foilar feed. I spray plants with various mite solutions every few days, then rinse with RO water and water with B1 before returning to tray

10. What kind of lights do you use and how many watts combined? (HPS, MH, fluorescent, halogen, incandescent "plant lights") I have 1000W HPS per 4x4 of table

11. How close are your lights to the plants? 12 - 36 inches (non-air cooled)

12. What size is your grow space in square feet? this particular space is about 140 SF which includes some walking/storage space

13. What is the temperature and humidity in your grow space? temp about 24, but varies from 22-28C, humidity about 50%

14. What is the pH of the soil? Have not tested. How do I test that?

15. Have you noticed any insect activity in your grow space? lots of mites as described above. Mite issue is coming under control and may be the cause
16. How much experience do you have growing? not much. This is my third batch/group.

Any insight or guidance is much appreciated.

When goes back into Vegetation stage (after already being in flower) it will start producing leaves like you are describing. I would suspect a timer malfunction when waz the last time you looked in on em with all lights out?

You are probably correct.

One of my lights has had timer issues and I think that is what has happened. One light is not going out at night. For all I know this issue could still be going on.

I will look into it and fix it immediately. I am at least glad to know it is not mites or disease.

Next question:

In effort to preserve the existing plants in flower with light leak (potentially 4lbs worth--now 2lbs) what can I do to maximize my yield from this group? Thanks!

Well, instead of 12/12, you could try going with lights 11 on and 13 off.
To maximize your yield I try to do the following:
  • Keep temps below 80 degrees. 76-79 is perfect.
  • Keep day and nighttime differential temps at no more than 10 degrees.
  • Humidity - 40-45%
  • Give them the maximum amount of nutes they can tolerate without burning.
Good luck.
