Unhappy Worms and Flies in DWC
permalink

Hi all
I'm scared because I found some worms on the roots of the plants growing in dwc. They are very little and dark, they are sitting on the roots and swimming in the water. I have also found a couple of flies around..... the plants are still looking healthy and green but, I don't want to let this problem grow.....
how can I get rid of them?
please help

In the first picture the fly on the right is a moth fly also called drain fly. Read about Moth Flies in the Home.

That may not be your only problem. It looks as if that container your roots are in is clear. Am I correct? Algae and other bad things can happen from light in your roots. Some aluminum tape can fix that but it's probably the same price as buying a new container that won't allow light penatration. I don't know what to do about your fly problem.....sorry.

Yes, the rez is transparent... I've been using it continuosly for 14 or 15 months without any problem.... but only tapwater allowed in that
recently I have noticed some green algae in the corners, and now some moth flies around... I think that the light on roots is not a problem in itself, BUT, under certain conditions, light can allows pest to reproduce more easily, and speed up their growing
I will buy a dark container asap, thank you

Finding the source of the breeding population will usually lead to a drain somewhere or to a spot that has moisture trapped under it. If you locate the trouble spot the use of a biological drain cleaner will more than likely eliminate them. The larvae feed on algae so definitely clean up your containers. I have not had to deal with them in the garden. Swatting adult flies and hand picking the larvae in the reservoir is about all I can offer to you. Find where they are breeding and the rest is cleanup.

This link offers good info.

thank u buzz
there is no drain points, it's just a rez filled with water... so maybe the problem is due to the moisture and algae that is developing more nad more in the last months, I don't know very well the reason why
I'm gonna change the rez, pipes and airstones asap.... I hope that this will be enough to drive those little bastards to a quicky hungry end
