Question First time grower-troubleshooting help needed
permalink

I have 3 plants that are all about a foot tall, all in 1.5gal containers under the same 400 MH bulb(currently suspended at 2 feet above the plants) and all three were grown from seed(White widow-via Amsterdam) and are on grow day 60. The temperature in my grow area is in the 90's and the humidity is at 30 percent.
My plants always seem thirsty so I've been watering them everyday with a water fertilizer mix(24-8-16), then I mist them with strait water.
My problem is that all three seem to be having different problem 2 of the plants have wilting and yellowing(and ultimately death) of the lower leaves. *please see first two pics* Of these two one is having a lot of curling of the leaves all over but especially at the top of the plant and is starting to show some yellowing at the top of the plant and even what looks like singing at the ends of some leaves. The other does not have curling of the leaves and is just barley having some lighting of the leaves at the top(but just barely-for the most part this plant seems healthy from the middle of the plant to the top).
My final plant has decided to come up with it's own problem witch is the leaves sides are curling in just a little bit on most of the leaves other than that this plant is the healthiest of the bunch.
I'm having a hard time troubleshooting when each plant seems to be having completely separate problems even though they are all in the same environment?? I should add that they are in a soil mix of perlite and potting soil, and I do have a fan to take off some of the heat from the lamp(which might be a little too strong for my grow area-i'm not sure) and also to exercise the plants.
I need a little guidance addressing all three problems, any and all advice is welcome!

Imo your plants are getting WAY to much nitrogen. They dont need fed everyday like that.

If you could get your heat down 15 degrees, the plants would love it. Id let the soil dry out good, and dump a bunch of plain water through each pot. Dont feed them for a bit.

Also, no need to mist your plants. Its not going to help them.

Question Thank you!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
All advice is welcome and appreciated(especially when it comes so quickly)but I'll definitely start by laying off the nitrogen and feeding daily.
Another question, since my plants seemed to be drying out fast I got in the habit of watering them daily then I added the fertilizer to the mix a couple of weeks ago and things went down hill from there. Getting to the point with the temp being in the 90's and the humidity at 30 percent is it normal to be watering every day(without the addition of fertilizer) or am I over watering in addition to over feeding?
Thank you again for your help!

You cant water too much as long as its drying out in between.

Those temps and that humidity will cause the soil to dry out quik though. Id give them plain water the next 2-3 waterings and see how they look then.

Sounds like your using miracle grow plant food, and plants cant take that stuff everyday.

You might be able to get your light a bit closer also. 2 feet is pretty far for a 400watt.

Picture number 4 looks like it might be over watering.

I wouldn't use Miracle Grow. Alaskan Fish emulsion is a wonderful product and is sold in many stores (caution it smells like fish shit). Or if you are brave enough find a grow shop and buy some fertilizers.

A temperature in the 90's is a bit too hot especially for young and tender plants. If it is possible drop your temperatures down to 75 or so. You will not have to water as often either with a lower temperature.

You only need to water MJ when the soil dries out. A good way to tell is to lift the pot and see how heavy it feels.

Since you have been feeding your plants nutrients daily I would do as suggested above and (for a 1.5 gallon container) pour about 4 gallons of clean water through the soil and do not fertilize for a while. You probably have excess nutrients and salt build up.

One last thing, when you do water make sure that you give them enough so that there is water leaking from the bottom of the pots. MJ loves a good dousing followed by a good drying out. It makes the roots grow nice and healthy.

Good luck

I'm new at this forum...actually haven't posted in any forum for over 3 years. Anyway, I agree with the fish emulsion as your vegging fert. I've used it for many years and had great results...if you can stand the smell. I don't know if using a chemical fert would do any better but I just feel better about using the organics. I use a 6-12-6 organic fert made in my state from decomposed organic matter and it seems to do fine also.
Anyway, glad to be part of a grow community again and grow on!!!

definitely feed less
permalink

Soil generally has nutes already in it which is why the plants did pretty good with just straight water at first. until your plants get bigger and can handle the feedings you should only be feeding once or twice a week and start off with a really low concentration and build up to a good mixture for your plants. Be patient with nutes whether they are organic or chemical. Your plants will let you know when they have had too much. The minute you see these types of issues do a small flush and back down your concentration. These are just general guidelines that may help you with your problem.

Added note: You should definitely do everything you can to bring down the temps in your room. MJ can grow at those temps but you will sacrifice a lot of quality and quantity. Also you should bring your lights closer to your plants or bring your plants closer to your light. You have massive amounts of stretch on your plants.

I hope all this chatter helps.
