permalink

I have lifted these buckets from a flood and drain hydro system.. and the roots had a few of these tiny little nats on them.. there are the pics below you have to zoom in to see the little guy i caught him walking around the bucket.. but they are attached to the roots .. not many ..
I used predatory nematodes once, and will again on wed.. just so it doesnt hurt the plants since i caught them early.. but what should i do??? just keep using these predatory nematodes.. they seem to be working a little so i figure a few more dosings will suffice.. please ANY help!!!

That sure looks like a root aphid to me. Try to get one on a piece of clear plastic tape to check it under magnification. Look at the back end of the abdomen and check it for two little "horns" extending. If you see the cornicles that is a sure sign it's an aphid. If it is a root aphid the most effective control is imidacloprid which is found in Bayer Tree and Shrub Spray.

The first thing to do is positively identify the insect.

Yes, the Bayer product is an insecticide with the active ingredient, imidacloprid. It is a systemic insecticide which means the plant will absorb the active ingredient through its roots and transport the insecticide throughout the stems and leaves. As a result there are a number of growers who will not use it. That call is up to you.

In this study the imidacloprid was tested on peach aphids.

Quote:
Imidacloprid was bioassayed using techniques similar to the foliar insecticides except plants were not dipped, but treated by varying concentrations of imidacloprid in the hydroponic reservoir. Imidacloprid treated plants were held at ambient room temperature for 48 hrs to allow systemic movement of the insecticide from the roots to the leaves before introducing the aphids.
What size is your reservoir? Read the label directions for the amount of insecticide to add per gallon of treatment and leave the reservoir alone for 48 hours before changing it.

Relax. Once again the first step in any insect problem is identification of the pest. Any pesticide recommendation without knowing the target pest is worthless. Now you know, the choice of what to do is up to you.

Here's a thread to help you decide whether to use the imidacloprid or not.

No, I haven't. I have my own bugs to fight and I hope they never include root aphids. Good luck with your treatment. Be sure to keep us posted on how the Azamax works.
