![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Several of my plants outdoors had a minor infestation this year late in the flowering cycle. I could usually see where they were hiding by a brown leaf that would resemble the beganing of some type of mold. Most of the time they are not crawling around on the surface of the plant where you can see them and just pick them off. Most of the cats I removed were discovered inside the bud and I would need to not only examine the surface of the plant looking for any irregularitys in the health of the leaves. Sometimes the damage was very minimal and I would just pick them out. Other times they chewed through an inch or two of bud before I discovered them. After hanging my plants for 5 days and dureing the initial and follow up trimm job I discovered a half a dozen babys crawling about the drying bud looking dazed and confused. When you cut them in two with your fiscars at the trimm table the will ooze a green slime, probably very high in THC. You might consider making some firecrackers or some greendragon with those juicy little morsels.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I've always wondered, can you check very thoroughly for Caterpillars, then put netting over the buds like fruit trees? Just put a net bag over the bud and tie it real good to the stem, once the finishe strecting? Anyone tried this one?

As thoroughly as a grower can check there are going to be caterpillars that escape notice. The netting sounds great in theory but it would be a nightmare in reality. Think how many nets there would be to secure. Keep on brainstormin'. In the meantime I'll be spritzing a little spinosad.![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I mean a net over the whole plant. Spray if you want, then net them. Or get guinea fowl / chickens to eat 'em...... Don't get me started, spinosad is probably the safest insecticide, I just always go for non-spray first.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | i used bt this year and it worked great. in any event, make sure to thoroughly clean the bud of any dead spots or caterpillar poop. my last couple of crops, that poopy, dead bud seemed to be the 1st to mold. peace- arnold layne

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Seems many of us were plagued with the worms this year. This was the first year I've had a problem with them on mj. We picked them by hand AND sprayed with BT. It will not harm you. I'm an organic farmer and use it on all my veggies when I have a problem. It makes the worms sick, they stop feeding immediately and die from starvation. Now that we had them this year, we'll be prepared next year and spray the BT early on in the season and a couple more times after that to prevent an infestation. Moths lay eggs on the undersides of the leaves. The worms hatch and are itty bitty buggers nearly impossible to see. They start feeding immediately after hatching. If you've got some BT on the leaves/buds, they will die right away before doing any damage. We sprayed late in flower when we discovered them (lost a couple of ounces to 'em), had a nice rain that rinsed it all off before harvest. Smoke is good with no detectable flavor from the BT. Again, it is harmless. I read somewhere that you can drink the stuff and it won't hurt you. It just makes the worms ill. Gives them a virus or something I think.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | from a webpage- What is Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt)? Bacillus thuringiensis, usually referred to as "Bt" (pronounced “bee-tee”), is a naturally occurring bacterium that is lethal to most leaf-eating caterpillars on trees, shrubs, flowers, and vegetables. Bacillus thuringiensis variety kurstaki (B.t.k.) is the general purpose material that homeowners buy when they see just the words Bt or Bacillus thuringiensis without the variety name attached. This is the type of Bt that is appropriate for home landscape use to kill caterpillars. As you can see on the left, there are also varieties designed to kill mosquitoes or potato beetles. Bt is harmless to all other insects, animals, and humans. It comes in powder form for use as a dust or, diluted with water, for use as a foliar spray. It is also available in liquid form. It is sprayed or dusted on leaves of plants that are under attack by caterpillars so that the pests will ingest the bacteria as they eat the leaves. The Bt causes paralysis of the caterpillar's digestive tract, causing it to stop feeding within two hours. Within a day or two, certainly no longer than 72 hours, the caterpillars die. I know it's safe, I just always go for something like controlling them beforehand with things like chickens or guinea fowl if possible. Simply because, I have to be just a little stranger than everybody else. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | There are several things to keep in mind when using Bt. Ultraviolet light (from sunlight) kills the bacteria. It is most effective against young caterpillars. It must be ingested by the larvae to be effective. Spinosad is as safe as Bt, lasts longer on the plant, and kills by contact and ingestion.
