Ok the situation is as follows: 3.5 weeks into flower using a 400 watt Metal Hilide Bulb. I decide to buy a HPS conversion bulb (cost $110 friggin dollars). I put it in and the plants get like 6 hours of HPS light before "night time" is imposed by the timer... Then the **** hits the fan. Timer comes back on at 11:30am and I don't get around to checking out the light until 8pm. I find that the system is on per usual, but the HPS bulb is not working (except for a glowing transistor in the bulb housing). I stress out, remove the HPS, put in the old MH, and it turns on fine. Hmmm. so I decide to put back in the HPS, and *poof* thing lights right up, steadily running until "nite time" it turns off. Today I couldn't check the light until 4:30pm, and it was running fine... but I noticed about 50% of the premature buds have approximatly 10% of their pistols, 40% completely brown and 60% turned half brown (harvest/mature color), with some tips seem to be rounded/burnt off? The other 50% of the bud locations look rock solid and no sign of brown pistols what so ever. the 50/50 ratio occurs over most plants, some plants have bud locations with a couple brown pistols, while still maintaining 50% with no brown pistols. This is way too early for the pistols to start turning, so I was wondering if the problem was one of these options A) changing lights/lumens stressed the plants B) the plants had no light for possibly 18 hours which stressed them C) The pistols are burning from the new light? D) some other explaination ( haven't watered the soil for about 7days, but plants don't seem thirsty [plus the moisture meter says they are 1-2 days from watering] and I have been spraying them once a day with a 1/5 teaspoon baking soda and water solution to fight a mild powder mold.) BTW the conversion bulb is a 360 watt Hortilux HPS, used for a 400watt MH ballast. And the light is placed about 12 inches from the plants, and the heat is not a factor... I am attaching a few pics that are coming off a crappy camera, so the detail of the brown pistols might not come out. The first pic is the best out of the three... so not much to look at. The bud in question has like 4 brown pistols 3 half brown pistols and about 15 or so completely white ones... the next two pics are just to give you an idea, and the pictures that follow are right before I put the HPS in... that was on 4/20 thanks

![]() | Here is another "better quality" image that just barely shows two pistols that have the "harvest-time" color to them... kinda look burnt, but not really... that buds has about 5 more pistols like the ones drawn with arrows, its just you can't see because of the quality.

I grow hydro, so my roots get soaked daily. But I also grow "regular" plants outdoors. I would never think of "letting soil dry completely" between waterings, like I have heard so many people advise in this forum . Water those babies, and get them flowers some much needed moisture. Those hairs are so airy, if they are stressed, they will turn brown. Good luck and God Bless my friend.

I had similar problems and started watering every 2 days during flowering. My containers have very good drainage (yours may not). The flowers have since grown a lot of new growth and the darker pistols are near the bottom of the bud now. I also raised my 400W HPS from 12" to 15" at the same time (heat was a factor in my case). Good Luck. --golfnstoned--
