Having problems with leaves drying out?
permalink

I can't figure out my problem. My plants are growing well but the leaves look like they're dying. They (not all and mostly the largest, oldest leaves) are yellowing and getting crunchy. The leaves are also curling up a little bit on the edges and I can't figure out the problem. I check the Ph and it is good (6.5), they aren't root bound (they are about 2 ft tall and in 5 gal buckets, any ideas? My set up consists of a 400wt HPS thats about 2 ft from the tops of the plants and I have good ventilation with a fan right next to the plants and an exhaust fan (the type you'd use in your bathroom). It may be a little warm in the growroom (maybe 90 degrees) but I've always grown outside with temperatures nearly in the 100's wuthout these problems. PLEASE HELP!

Thanks for the link. That was very helpful and based on what I saw it looks like heat burn. My 400 watt HPS is 2 feet away from my plants and I really thought that was far enough. Would heat burn also cause the plant to wither? My plants are not getting very wide. The branches are staying really close to the main stem.

ok
Seems like you mentioned everything, but the Soil. It needs to be light & airy, for the roots to breath otherwise you'll have a runty plant.

When i'm in doubt as to a problem, .. i have allways been told, go back, & start at the basics... ... ... Air - you got going .. Light - you got going, ... .. but the last main is the Soil... how is IT ?

You did mention, leaves are curling up, this Could be a sign of lack of Magnesium, which could result in the plants lack of ability to feed.

Sorry i can't help more, i thought others would jump in, with a few ideas,... hope they still do.

GoodLuck

well the soil should be great. It is Black Gold organic with all kinds of crazy sh_t like bat guado and worm castings mixed with perlite. I am just amazed these plants are not absolutely thriving. Could it just be too hot in my grow room?

Yes, it could be too hot, wich could make the plant stop growing....
But i doubt it, .. because my room is currenty at about 95°ƒ in the daytime, & i have little trouble.
I used just 1 430W HPS, for the veg cycle, .. cause it was just to hot then, room peaked at about 90°ƒ with that light, about 1 or 2" above the plants.
Now for flower, i got my 1000W HPS in there, temp peaks at about 96°ƒ on the worst days, & the light is about 2 or 3" above the plants, ... but i have A Lot of air moving through, .. so the heat stress signs, are alllmost non showing.
So i don't really think it's the heat.

How often do you water?
How much do you water?
How wet/dry is the soil, before you water again?

Good drainage?
Do they drain when u water them?
Do they ever dry out?

All i use , & nothing but, .. for a grow medium, is, ... Sunshine Mix #4 Agressive Grow - is a sterilized pre mix of, ... Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss, Perilite, Dolomitic Limestone (for pH adjustment), Gypsum, Wetting agent. thats it, no soil.

(Pots feel Super light before watering.) Totaly dried out between waterings, & they want watered about 2 litres per plant, every 2 to 3 days, cause of the heat. My pots are smaller #11 pot size.
The plants stand a total (including pot), 3' in height, & 2' in width across, at 2 months old

I am feeding my plants nothing but, miracle grow 20-20-20 in veg, & a Monster Bloom 0-50-10 , .. + some other stuff in flower. Fed every 2nd, to 3rd watering, adding epsom every 4th watering.
Nothing fancy but damn nice product in the end.

So, ... if i was to pick on anything in yer grow prob, .. without knowing Your feeding, & watering theme, .. added to the food rich soil
i just Don't like pre-fed soil, ... it scares me.

Rummy.

Did you mean you had your HPS 2' to 3' from the plant tops or was it really 2" to 3". If it is 2' to 3" please post how you got that much Ventilation.
When I used a HPS 430w with a glassed sealed reflector & had the reflector vented with it's own fans I could never get my plant tops closer than 10" with-out burning them.

Hogleg.

I grow Hydro so I'm not sure this applies to a dirt grow but, I had the same symtoms with my current grow. I finally narrowed it down to to high a nute level, (to much fertilizer).

I've posted lots of pics in my grow journal so you might want to see if my problem looks like your problem.
Actually I'll go ahead and post a pic here.

Later guys.

I use an open bare vertical bulb, with reflector.
I have an 8" intake fan, 12" ossilating fan, up close on high, & a turbo exaust fan, in box, built onto a window, .. wich moves a tonn of air through the room. Yes 2" inches, easy ... vertical though.

i agree, they may be over fed.

OK Rummy.

Now I see how you are able to get your plants that close.
Good idea going vertical.
Unluckily my space isn't tall enough to go vertical with the light. It's only 55"tall.

Thanks anyway.

Later.
