will a drug store heating pad work as well? babys elavated from mat at all? lastly, any early telltale signs heat may be too much

Elevate the plants from the heatpad somehow. That will be fine. If you stick a wet spong on the heating pad (not near the controller) as well it may act as a little greenhouse.
