Unhappy problems. dark, curling, and dying leaves
permalink

my 3 babes have been in veg for about 2 1/2 months now and are under a 400 watt hps with a fan constantly on them. they are in 2 gallon pots and are a little over 2 feet in length.

the tops are getting curly just curling under, and the older growths are just yellowing. so many older leaves have come off and i dont know what to do.

i have implemented LST into this grow but it seems like my big leaves are suffering, all thats left is the small and medium newer growths, its a lot, but all the big fingers have yellowed and fallen off. also, 2 of the plants' leaves are getting very green, a very dark green that they have never been.

there is no sign of any type of bug or any change in schedule of anything.(water, nutes, light, etc) i use miracle grow, the regular solution of 15-30-15. can anyone help me with these problems? thanks so much.

Need to transplant into bigger pot. Especially if you are lsting and at that height. Just because your plants don't grow as high, their root system continues along unabated.

Maybe not, but we'll know more after the transplant. If your roots were in a tight ball, that would further strengthen the rootbound argument.
If the bottom set of leaves started to yellow first, and then it worked it's way up the plant, that's classic rootbound symptoms.

Loss of chlorophyll may also be lack of nitrogen, which brings us to your fertilizer. There are better ratios than what you are using, look up a thread called the importance of K if you haven't read it already. But I used 15-30-15 for awhile without killing any of them.

The dark green could be overfert or overwater, probably lot of other things too.

That's why I take it one step at a time. Easy to get overwhelmed with what it might be.

I know you said schedules haven't changed, but what are they?

Watering/fert schedule?
Amount of water used and dosage of fertilizer?
What lights they under?

Let us know what's up after the transplant is done.

it wasnt that rootbound. i put em in 5 gallon buckets. there were roots on the sides and on the bottom but not very tightly packed. that was good for them anyways.

im using a 400 hps, water every day about a cup of water per plant, 1/2 teaspoon per cup every other day. sometimes more often when the soil dries up from the heat from the hps and teh fan blowin on it. light schedule is 18/6 on a timer.

i rearranged the plants and their locations and all the stings n ****, i wish i could show a pic but i dont have my camera right now. when i get it ill be sure to post a pic of them three, the stems are getting pretty fat, about a half an inch at the base.

anyways theres my setup. also are there any recommendations on waht kinda nutes i should use and where to get them? thanks so much.

Ok, well a cup of water every day in 2 gallon pots isn't the best way to water.

It is better to water your pot well, until water starts to come out the drainage holes, and then allow to dry thoroughly before watering again. With my 400 hps I water maybe every 3-4 days at the most.

Also, when I was using 15-30-15, at full strength I was using 1/2 tablespoon per gallon of water. I started at 1/8 tablespoon per gallon and stepped up gradually from there.

Peters 20-20-20 is a good overall fert, complete with micronutes. Available wherever garden supplies are sold.

So, the transplant is out of the way. I would be considering the fact of watering too often being the culprit now.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

Heya Host!

I would have to agree with Plains. Watering everyday will eventually lead to overwatering...trust me, I did it myself on my first attempt. It's much eaiser, in my opinion, for a plant to recover from not having enough water as opposed to a plant that has too much water.

As far a fertz, I use my own mix of organics...kelp meal and bat guanos. Peters 20-20-20 works well, I have a buddy that uses it and the only problem he had was using too much. IMO, it's better to underfert than to overfert.

Just my .02 cents. Hope everything goes well for you.

Laterz,
Anima

P.S. Nice COW Plains!

thanks for all your responses and help guys, i appreciate it. the transplant went very nicely, and used a lot of soil, im glad its so cheap. and yeah, before i was watering til the water came out the bottom, but it seemed to go through the soil easily, so i transplanted. now the plants are looking gorgeous and theyre growing pretty fast. i flushed them too. i think im about ready to flower, theyve been in veg for a long ass time.

but now they are all very healthy and happy, and problems are solved. ill try that 20-20-20 stuff as soon as i can get some. but what kind of ferts do i need for flowering, and is there anything special i need to do when going into this growth stage besides increasing Nitrogen levels and giving less light? and should i gradually bring them into the less light stage, like from 18/6 to 16/8 to 14/10 then 12/12 over maybe a couple of weeks? i just know the plants like to take their time. any suggestions/comments/anything will be appreciated. thanks.

Hey host,

Your fert will work throughout growth, but for the first stage high N is recommended and for flowering, a food with high P is the way to go. Let's not forget about K either during flowering.

For vegative growth, a fert with twice as much N as P and K. A 2-1-1 ratio could be used. For example my mix for vegative is 11-2-2. Pretty close to 2-1-1.

For flowering, I back off of the N and add more P and K. My fert mix for flowering is 5-10-8. Kinda close to a 1-2-2, but not quite.

As for your light cycle. When you are ready to start flowering, change your light cycle to 12/12. I haven't tried any other light cycles personally.

Why not start a grow journal?
