Should I be worried?
permalink

Hello my fellow marijuana engineers,

I have a small situation I would like your help with. About a month ago I germinated 4 seeds (Unknown Kush) in my backyard. Strapped for cash, I left the 4 plants in a location where they couldn't be seen (security in the area was the top priority), but they were only receiving about 1-2 hours of DIRECT light a day. They slowly grew to heights ranging from 2"-6" over the span of about 3 weeks. They were very green and hardly had any yellowing of leaves, even on it's first set.

Here's my question...
I finally saved enough money to get the air-cooled 600w HPS PL system I had been looking forward to using. I transplanted the plants into 5 gallon buckets filled with Fox Farms ocean forest soil mixed with Perlite. After doing the transplanting and setting up the 600 w HPS light for a 24/0 cycle everything looked great. The temperatures were consistently in the high 80's and Humidity has consistently hovered around 30%. I know these numbers are not prime for marijuana, but my cash flow at the moment is not so good. When my financial condition improves, I hope to be able to get fan and ducting for the air-cooled reflector, a few fans for the room, and a humidifier. Well, back to my problem. A few days after setting up, I noticed the plants were turning a strange yellowish color and drooping a bit. And the yellowish color on the plants is not the usual yellowing we all see on leaves, where the tip or another location gets a small yellow spot and eventually that spot spreads to the whole leaf and eventually dies. The plants are still putting out new growth at a feverish pace, but the whole coloring thing has got me worried. THE WHOLE PLANT LOOKS YELLOW! What did I do wrong?? Are the plants getting used to their new soil?? Were they too young to handle the 600w HPS?? Could I have done something wrong during transplant?? WHAT DID I DO?? WHAT CAN I DO??
Someone please help!

I'm an outdoor grower so unfortunatly I don't think I can be of much help. Yellowing usually means a Nitrogen deficiency but with that setup I dunno...the best I can do is get you to check this and this, they should help you narrow things down, and someone with indoor experience should be along to help you out soon..Cheers

Question worried?

Hello OgKush and by the way Welcome to HC.com

First off great choice of lights and a excellent choice of starting soil used by my self and many others on the boards.

Don't worry about equipment for your grow room; that to will grow in time, as does the garden. Like you said your growing conditions are not perfect but they are with in the growing range.

I see my grow room { at first } and now my veg area, clone area, mom cabs as constant works in progress, a little today and some more tommorow.

Fox Farm Ocean is a potting mix that is great for young plants. I only add water the first 14 to 18 days, before I begin with the nutes at 1/3 strength. How ever your plants are older and may have different nute requirments,

also I would look at the Ph of your soil it is probablly not the same as the soil outside that they were in, be carefull not to create a problem there.

I'm not really sure of a answer for you, but this is where I would begin to look for a problem.

good luck

-Have you tried taking the plants out from under the HPS and look at them because of course the plants will look more yellowish anywhere in the light from the HPS just because of the orangish color it puts off.. So no offense but I really hope it is just not the light color throwing your perception into deception

Other than that I have no idea in the world what would make it do that from that transfer.. If I were the plant I'd say hey thank you for the upgrade dude mar!

but yeah just my

Hope everything is A ok!

peace

That was the first thing I did. I looked at them outside the room with the HPS entirely. I know how the light changes the color in the room. Just yesterday our official growroom was constructed which is roughly 20 feet x 10 feet x 7 feet. The light was hung about 20" above the plants on yo-yo's, so adjusting the heights while the plants grow won't be a problem. 3 of them are under the HPS, while the youngest one is still under it's own FLO in the seedling area. It's just put out it's 2nd set of true leaves and is looking gorgeous! Extremely green, short and showing trich's to the naked eye. I'm not really sure when I should add it with the other's under the HPS. Any help on this would also be appreciated. Back to the new room, the temperatures in the room just ten minutes ago was 75F and the RH was about 56%. From what I've read about growing, and believe me it's been alot, that's right around the optimal conditions. Am I right? I've decided to go with a 18/6 lighting schedule to ease up on the electricity bill, as well as give the room a chance to cool off a bit. I noticed the room was around 63F before the light was turned on. Is that a safe temperature for herb?

this problem sounds like it is due to the stress of transplanting to a new soil. nothing serious. wehn you are transplanting you should always put your hands under the roots and pull out a portion of the soil with it. the best advice i can give you is to put some decent firtilizer on them. the best fertilizer i know that fixes droopiness and discoloration is miracle-gro

For once in my life I can say I know what the answer to someone's problem is!

For once in my life I can say I know what the answer to someone's problem is! YOUR LIGHT IS TOO CLOSE!

I've read a lot of half baked info from this website. Not to say it was all incorrect, but some very important tid-bits were left out. For instance I read that you should hang your HPS anywhere from 24" to 36" above your plants to get maximum growth potential. Well, that is not correct for all circumstances my friend.

If you have the circulation of air to offset heat at these distances then by all means. That still doesn't give you an insurance policy in the event that the ultra intense light does do harm to your young plants. Young plants are like young children. You don't go giving an infant a drink of water from a fire-hydrant, right? Putting an HPS 20" above a young plant is no different! I don't care what any "EXPERT" says with regard to placing HID lights that close to any plant. I've got my three week olds 48" away right now and I think that's as close as they will get till I feel more comfortable.

I've serious stress issues with mine currently cause only 72 hours ago they were 24" inches from a 1000w HPS. I can easily imagine that a 600w at 20" being just as insanely harmful. They are your plants...why take any crazy chances of burning them or applying un-needed stress.

When someone tells you to place the light 20" above your plants you tell them "YOU GO PUT YOUR PLANTS THAT CLOSE AND LET THEM SIT THERE FOR A WEEK AND SEND ME PICS OF WHAT YOU GET"! In short don't take anyone's word for it when it comes to placing lights that close to your plants. That's just crazy. If you don't believe me just keep your plants where they are and find out for yourself.

It really angers me that people don't specify what the limits of distance with relation to light intensity is. We both are learning the hard way

Though I fully believe that others have done the same thing without the negative effects that you and I are experiencing. How is that? I have no fuc&ing clue!

Even moving the air well and having temps register in the norm at the plant tops doesn't mean they can't get scorched! Light intensity will allow heat to build up in the plant leaves. Much like outside when it might be only 80 degrees and feel comfortable. Then you go to sit in a car with black leather seats only to get scorched...make sense yet? Same principle more or less.

Ok, bring on the flames
