Hey, I have two plants flowering under a 125W 2700K CFL w/reflector...this is my first grow and I was blessed to get two females from TWO seeds! I have a grow journal going, but I don't have a lot of time to keep up with it (I'm a graduate science student, I study like 10 hours a day)...my question is "is there a way to tell (physical appearance) whether or not a fan blade is discolored (brown/rust colored) because of being too close to the lights, or over-fertilized?" I have one sativa-dominant, and I have recently bent her over (tied down) about 75 degrees from the third node on up to get more even light distribution (on a plant that is probably 20" tall). The other plant appears to be more indica-dominant, so naturally, it's not as tall, and I have the main stalk of the indica "LSTed" under the tied-down sativa. I'm only seeing minor amount of fan-leaf burn on the sativa plant, and I think this occured during my repositioning it (the top of it especially was in direct contact with the CFL, accidentally of course, during this process). The indica has been receiving the same amount of fertilizer (1-2-1), and shows no such signs. Thanks...

| Yes, I do have pictures (can take them), but from your answer, I'm more certain I'm right in thinking that it's light burn. What effect does light burn on a couple fan leaves have on the plant? And while we're on the subject, how does over-fertilization (nute burn) affect the plant (health, growth, possibly even yield/potency?)? | ||

Simple light nute burns, like leaf tip burn, aren't usually terrible. They may slow you down a little and make you back off on nutes. Too much during late flower can totally torch the cola! Large amounts of excess nutes like Nitrogen during flower can cause big problems..., under-developed bud sites, root problems, etc. Different nute toxicities cause different problems. All of which can have an adverse effect on yield.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I have found that plants growing near the lamp will have thickened stems, stretched buds, & yield losses... If you can pin them back, to help distribute the light & avoid overheating the tops, that will help a lot. 2 reasons, first up its dead, & blocking light from healthy material, and second, in my experience, a patch of burn is a likely starting point for bud rot, aka botrytis. ![]()

| Thanks guys...I understand the difference now between lumen burn, which is much more likely to happen with HID with CFL lighting, and what I'll call "contact burn." Contact burn is what I believe I have experienced, and I've got it pretty much under control, as one of my two flowering plants has stopped stretching, so I don't have to worry about constantly (daily) repositioning it (now only have to worry about the other, which is not done stretching yet)...that's the thing, from what I understand about CFL, the plants must be very close in order to absorb enough light...so throughout the course of their lives, I've been almost daily moving them around to accomodate for growth. But with the lack of ventilation in my space (coupled with heat concerns) the biggest CFLs are FINE with me...this is my first grow, and it's actually going really well! It's just the tips of the leaves that grow out, contact the bulb, and get a little toasted on the tips...I end up cutting the tips (only the very tip) of the leaves in this situation off. Attached is a picture of the top of my "sativa-dominant" (they haven't had names, the other is "the indica.") from yesterday. | ||
