Hello everybody. I had a question regarding fan leaves. I am guessing that the behavior of the fan leaves is indicative of some sort of nutrient imbalance or a lighting issue, but like I said I'm guessing so I wanted to get your professional opinions. Plants are in about fifth week of flowering and up until this point the fan leaves have been growing horizontally from the stalk, presenting a very healthy appearance. Recently, some of the plants have had their fan leaves begin to point skyward. The blades of the leaves appear normal, but the petioles have changed from a horizontal growing posistion to more of a 45 degree or more upwards growing angle, folding up and in towards the main stalk. The overall health of the plants still look good. There is some slight yellowing beginning at the bottoms of the plants, but I thought this was somewhat normal for the stage of develpment that they are in. These are indoor plants growing under 1000w HPS in 2 gallon containers with soil. They are on a 12/12 cycle and are being fertilized with KaBloom nearly every watering. Light is on a 6' track covering an area roughly 6' x 4'. Budding sites are developing nicely but these fan leaves are a bit worrisome. Any advice would be appreciated.

Do your leaves look normal otherwise? I think it's just a happy plant i've had them do that but only when everything was just right. Do you have a pic?

From what you described sounds like the are getting proper care and feeding. Unless just the edges of the leaves are curling up then yeah bluebloodletter nailed it, high temps/low humidity. Got pics?

I've seen both...leaves that perked up, and pointed upwards at about a 45* angle shortly after a good watering. Or leaves that are pointed upwards fighting off heat. I think the plants reaction to heat from lighting, is nothing short of amazing. It seems as if the plant realizes, that by reducing the exposed surface area of its leaves, it reduces the amount of heat the leaf receives. Like holding the opened palm of your hand over a warm lightbulb. Then trying it using the edge of your hand or fingertips. You'll plainly see that your hand absorbs much more heat based on the angle of incidence. Turning your hand, (so an edge faces the light), greatly reduces the heat on the palm, though the distance between them is the same. I try to note when it happens. If the leaves point up directly after watering...I don't worry much. But if they turn their mass away from the lights several days after watering (and a couple days before the next watering), I'll most likely raise my lights an inch or two.

Makes perfect sense to me. And you are correct on the watering and soil grows. Water and nute them and they will respond like that. In hydro, when everything is dialed in, they may be like that for a long time. So its a matter of determining what the heck is going on. So, like the old saying says, "put your hand up at the bud thats closest to the bulb and see how it feels". If you cant handle it, the plant cant either. Move the light. Jamesgang

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I have an 8' height limit. Then I loose 4-6" with the light itself. The last 12"-14" of my last grow, a couple of the plants showed the leaf behavior that is being described here. The bud came out like big green hams, trich's not damaged in the least. Just that amazing " L" bend to reduce heat. JW

Thanks so much everyone. Reading your posts has made me feel better. You guys are very helpful and supportive. The temp never gets higher than 78F and never gets lower than 64F. The humidity ranges from 42% with light on to 35% with lights off. I live in a very dry climate. The light is fairly close to the tops but like I mentioned, it's on a track so no section of garden is ever exposed to light from directly overhead for more than thirty seconds at a time. I have to agree with you all. I think they are just happy, maybe a little dry, but happy. Happy New Year to all. I hope 2006 brings you peace and prosperity. Thanks again for the wisdom.
