Does my baby have cancer?
permalink

So, I have 5 plants at about week 4 of 24/0. Ever since they were just seedlings, one of my plants has been listing to one side, regardless of how much I try to train her (hopefully) to stand straight. This morning during my daily checkup, I noticed something unusual at the base of the stem. I pushed away a little dirt, and found a ball of what looked like undifferentiated tissue. It's whitish, round, and about the size of a very large pea. It's mass is causing the plant to grow "around" it as it tries to reach the light. Has anyone else seen anything like this? I know some hardwoods, oaks in particular, can form galls in response to environmental stress or simply as a consequence of genetics. Galls are a kind of "cancer" if you want to think of it that way, though they are rarely harmful to oak trees. Can MJ form similar structures? Thanks in advance for your help!

It could be callus (undifferentiated tissue) and sounds like it. Can you get a picture? The galls can form as a response to infection by Agrobacterium and are the cause of those growths. They can be very harmful to the trees as they away resources from the growing tree. It can certainly lead to death. MJ can form similar structures, but determining the cause can be a little harder.

Sorry for the bad shots, need to work on my photography... I dug a little deeper and found that there were roots coming from the ball. In fact, it looks like the plant was j-rooted. It seems to have grown a twisted-over stem? I can't be sure, because I don't know what I'm looking at...

Funny little thing.. I'm sure others have seen this but I haven't.

I'd say take advantage of the plant's LST already in the works.

There really is no right way to grow, you have to resonate with a style and learn what you can,
tweak it to your own style and raise the bar each grow... OD '07

My thoughts exactly . As long as it's not harmful (and it isn't, yet), using LST was my plan from the start. Funny how these things work out sometimes..

Definitely explains why she is leaning to one side. I would just keep it covered with dirt and keep on training. Roots will eventually grow from the twisted stem part and strengthen her up.
