Lightproof Rubbermaid
permalink

hey guys, im currently going to have to move my babys into a rubbermaid bin and i have been toying with how im going to fully lightproof it.

I have tons of layers of white wallpaper on the inside but that doesnt help much. would i benefit from spraypainting a few layers on top of the wallpaper?

Hi, gbt34.

I would not put paper or paint on the inside of the tote. I have considered spray painting the outside of any 'transparent' tote I buy in the future. I think that that is your best bet.

My only concern: Will spray paint flake after a period?

I lightproof the outside of my totes with reflectix....

Wallpaper might be okay I guess. But it could mold or something? seems to papery, and not lightproof.

Definitely dont put the paper on the inside though. on the outside is ok.

/edit oh wait, I guess if the plants are inside the tote completely your fine putting it inside. I was thinking it was for a hydro system

What if i were to lay down a few layers of flat black then a few of flat white, would this stop light from coming through the thin walls of the rubbermaid?

Also does this reflectix stuff let light through? where would i acquire some of this stuff?

Go find your self some black TEXTURED spray paint. I think there is a thick rubbery one. 2 coats of that with your reflective material and you are set. White paint alone wont ever do enough.

Oh! I guess that was my fault. That's what I thought as well.

I think Krylon makes a spraypaint specific for plastics. 2 coats of black, then 2 coats of white. That should get the job done. The relectix is great but you could run into heat issues if you don't have enough ventilation even with CFLs. Also, if you double stack two totes (to double the height), obviously weatherstrip the rims of both to prevent light leak at the seam. I've got some scrap 2" wide sections of 4" pvc with a slit in it to act as cheap clamps. Keeps everything together with no major worries of the top tote shifting off and falling.
