that is some good info that DrMistry gave you but a MH is for veg growth and is in the blue part of the chart that is in that link.
you are going to need a HPS light to flower your plant you need the red part to flower a plant good

to sum it up for you it is like growing outside you have your veg period and your flower period

so when it is spring the sun has more of a blue part witch is good for veging your plants and when it turns fall it has a red part that is good for the flowering part of your plants.

if your ballest is a flipable swith to go to hps then you are set and go get a hps bulb and take the MH out and switch to your HPS and you are ok to go but if it is not one you are going to have to go out and buy a new ballest and bulb.

hope this helps you out some

It's not impossible to flower with MH bulbs, and in fact some recommend them in conjunction with HPS to increase THC production, but HPS light is "redder" which cannabis seems to like. Some believe this is because the sun's light is rendered more red during late fall, winter and early spring (the sun is lower in the sky and thus the light must pass through more of the Earth's atmosphere, leaving more red and less blue in the light which reaches the ground). There are plenty of threads about lighting, lights, PAR, wattage, spectrum, lums/sq ft and so on, but if MH is all you have for the moment then go for it. You might not get "centrefold" buds but something will come out the other end you can smoke...and also you'll learn plenty just by growing healthy plants. I know I've flowered indicas with halogen and while I wasn't exactly overgrown with bud at the end, it was a great oppertunity to learn more about what the plants want and need without the pressure of expecting a massive harvest.

Get stuck in, there are plenty of theories and ideas about what you can and can't get away with when growing MJ, but the only thing that really counts is what works for you. Could be you amaze us all and end up with a pound-a-plant harvest

You can flower with the MH, i can't say how nice and dense the buds are gonna be but...

If you are going with one type of light all the way through go with the HPS.
