I am trying to plan out my first grow and ive done a ton of reading on these forums and also the cannabis cultivation growFAQ. I still have a few burning questions tho! If these questions seem stupid or you know of posts answering the same questions I apologize but im just a newbie trying to absorb as much information as possible before my first grow attempt. 1. How much ventilation is really needed for a 400w HPS light in a 6x4 closet, will i be ok just opening the doors during light cycles? Also should i be worried about heat from the light being an issue in this type of space? 2. My first grow I was planning on just going for one plant, how worried should I be about odor problems? (I live in an apt building..) I know it matters on the strain I choose and I was thinking about WW or Juicy Fruit or some Diesel. I'm aware that Northern Lights is obviously my safest bet but if i chose one of the first three will i be freaking out my last few weeks of my grow when it becomes the smelliest? Thanks in advance for any advice this extremely knowledgeable community has to offer! Edit: Also if any of you veteran growers can remember your closet growing days and feel like warning me of common pitfalls that might come up given my noob status and choice of a closet grow location please let me know! You will have to deal with odors during late flowering. Quote:
which strains offer the least amount of smell but I think I've heard that Diesel is one of the stinkiest. Good luck to you... plans are good, best to be prepared. Peace- OD

![]() | Thanks for the quick reply OD. I apologize for the hidden questions, I know its a pain when noobs do that. (should be question #2) The closet in question is on an exterior wall (I live in the Midwest so the exterior walls can get pretty cold/warm depending on the season). The air around will be a standard 70-75 degrees. I really appreciate the answers and will continue to do more research. My goal is to just avoid the “oh s$#@” moment that im sure a lot of first timers go through. Thanks! BL Last edited by bahamutzero : 08-14-2008 at 11:28 PM.

![]() ![]() | for ventilation you wanna extange the air 3-4 times per min so you got 6x4x height then x4 get a can fan for that then either get a small computer fan or something along theo lines for the air. if you got the money get a carbon filter you can get a fan+filter for around 300$ at a head shop. as for odor if you dont got the money just use ona jel outside the clos. hope it helps peace

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | The best advice I can give is study as many grow journals as possible. When I first started reading up on growing I would read 15-20 journals a night. I also had a pad of paper next to the computer taking notes. Its amazing how much I have reffered back to my little grow guide I created for myself. Being a stoner this really helped remember what I have learned. I would start more than one plant. You can always cull out the weaker plants when it comes flower time. I started with three plants all turned out to be female. But I only have room to flower one plant it was nice to have three females to choose from because one of the three was a stronger Phenotype. This was my first grow and it was a learning experience. I love every second of it. Good luck

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Ok for starters, you need to figure in the venting of the room and the oder control all at the same time. If you do not have a light already you may want to check out Cool Tubes. They cool very easily therefore needing less fan. If you are ok as far as opening the closet doors can you leave them cracked and have a fan blowing up at the light? There is a small carbon filter called the Elf or the Goblin made for closets and tents. First thing, do a test run with just the light in the room and record some temp and humidity numbers. That should give you some ideas on how much of what you need. Just read journals, can't read enough on this site. Peace, EMj

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | dude, my educated guess is that your gonna need alot more then a computer fan for venalation, i have a grow tent in my clost useing 208 watts og t5 flouros, i have a 4 inch inline fan running out the top and its still aroun 80 degrees underneath the lights, with the door open to let heat escape, due to the size of your your room you looking at about 100 cubic feet, they say to multiply that by three and use a fan that blows out that many cfm, i think you'de probably be okay with a 6 inch inline, they are not that expensive and blow out 250 cfm, just get some extra hose and rig it up so that the end of the hose is near the light, that way its suck heat away straight from the light. for output, you probably gonna want to cut a hole in the wall, now, dont freak out, you could cut a 6 inch hole in the cieling and just use a vent cover to cover it up, but wont there be light coming out you say? well, were gonna kill two bird with one stone here, you can buy universal replaceent carbone filters at places like home depot or lowes, all it is is a roll of carbon filter u cut to size for whatever type of air filter you have, now what you do it put 2 or 3, or mayby even 4 depending on your needs, underneath your vent cover. you may also need an intake vent, in that case do the same thing, just do it somwhere in the bottom of the closet and you can use the extra carbone filter to keep the light out although you probably wouldnt need to keep the smell out from the intake, but you might, becaseu if you dont plant on running the fan all night, some smell may leak out in intake. This would be the best way to do it my friend, and you will always be able to keep the door closed, contrary to what people may say, the carbon filter i mentioned wont block that much air from passing thru, but the other, more expensive style will, up to half, you may want to get a better fan, but they way i'm telling you would be the cheapest way to go, alot of people make homemade carbon filters using the stuff i told about and they say they work great, with this setup, you might as well grow more than one.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Check out HTG Supply online, they have a 6" fan and carbon filter for 200$, that would be more than enough, I think around 450 cfm, you could probably even get away with the 4", a little cheaper, especially if you can figure out a way to get the light ballast out of the room. Depends on your stealth requirements, whether you rent or own, ie if drilling holes in walls for cords and such is an option. Good luck, good to see you did some research first. I read for a couple months before I had the nerve to make my first post. ![]() Edit: don't know your financial means, at the other end of the spectrum is a 6" inline ductbooster fan, around 250 cfm, for 27$ at Home Depot, lotta range there, I know.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | if you want to save some cash, here is a diy carbon filter, you can get a 6 inch inline for like 40 bucks and then just read the intructions on the link to this thread, this uses the same stuff i ws telling u about, as far as the filter goes. http://www.gardenscure.com/420/secur...on-filter.html
