(pi)r² right? so (3.14)3.5² = 38.465. That would be the area of your intake. (38.465)(3) = 115.395. That is what your passive intake's area should be. To find the area of the intake we just solve for "r" in (3.14)r²=115.395. r²=36.75. Square root of 36.75= 6.06". So your intake should need only be about 6" . An intake with a diameter of 10.5" would give you an intake area of 346.185. While three 3.5" intake would give you the desired surface area of passive intake (since you are using three of the exact hole that was used for the exhaust). Someone please correct me if it is based on diameter. I remember arguing about this one time but I cant remember who won .

![]() | Thanks Lord K! That makes a lot more sense. I had no idea what the 3x rule was based off of and assumed diameter. Most recently I have been trying to figure out how to power a computer fan to a regular house outlet. Some say I need a computer power supply and some say I need to simply connect the wires to an extension cord. I'm awful with electricity so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I've also been pondering about lighting still.. I may get 2 flood light CFLs at 64 watts each 6700K and position those so that one covers 2 pots. After 2-3 weeks I'd add some lights for flowering. Not sure what to do there yet.

Alternatively, I'm thinking of using the reflector and ballast that goes with my 250 watt HPS for a 75 or 150 watt HPS bulb since 250 watt seems to be too much. Will there be an issue putting a lower wattage bulb in that setup? Harvey: I found out I need a DC "wall cube" rated at 12V and over 500ma. Which I think is what you are describing in your post. I then have to cut the wires to the "wall cube" and connect them to the wires that come off the fan. If it runs backwards, switch the wires. I still have questions of course though, the fan has 3 wires. I don't know if the "wall cube" does. Also, I'm not too sure where to pick one of these "wall cubes" up. Wall-mart? Thanks again guys!

![]() | Made a trip into town today and picked up some supplies. I grabbed many little things needed. Such as an emergency blanket to use as reflective material, a light timer, digital thermometer, and items needed to build a carbon filter. Are pH tester and adjusters from Wal-mart ok? I also grabbed a 150 watt HPS bulb. Do you think it will work with the ballast I have for the 250 watt HPS? It fits in the socket but I was too unsure to plug it in. I'm currently looking to purchase a computer fan. What is the minimum CFM rating i should get if I'll need the fan to push air through a carbon filter? Attached is a picture of the supplies I grabbed, a close up of the 150 watt HPS bulb, and some pictures of my box (still waiting for some love).

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | For Heaven's sake, lose the Miracle Grow. go to Walmart and get some plain old organic soil. Or Fox Farms OCean Forest. the best thing i can advise you to do in if you are going to make a 10 inch exhaust hole, make 3 of them for intake. Run your light without the plants in the box and check the temps. if you can keep the temps around 72-85 degrees you are golden. If it's too hot, you need a more powerful fan. If it's too cold get a dimmer switch for the fan so you can control the speed and slow it down. Nice looking box, funk. put the intakes close to the bottom of the box and the exhaust close to the top - heat rises good luck

![]() | Freakshow: Thanks for comin by! Consider the Miracle Grow ditched and the Fox Farms Ocean Forest on board. The 150 watt HPS bulb is not going to work with the ballast I have so I'll be using the 250 watt HPS bulb and just have a good exhaust. So, my intake design is still in the works. I'm thinking 4 3 " holes on the bottom SIDES of the box. Two on each side. Then 2 3'' holes on the top BACK side of the box with 2 120mm 110 CFM computer fans. Each blowing out of the box through their own carbon filter. A fan will also be placed inside to blow on the plants and bulb. What do you think? Enough? The reflector is huge and almost blocks air from going up to the exhaust so I'm going to trim it up a bit. Attached is a chart I find useful. Edit: It seems since I had to change the resolution, you have to save it and zoom in. Sorry!
