are you talking dirt?

I like 3 to 5 gallons for dirt (sorry....soil)
1 gallon for each foot of plant...just my made up rule of thumb
so if I'm planning a closet monster a 5 gallon paint bucket
if I'm going to keep it small or it's a small breed...3 gallon trash cans

Good morning,

I usually go from a 16oz Solo cup to a 1 gallon for training then move along into a 3 gallon as a final but, i'm finding using FFOF I can't seem to keep them in the 3 gallon' for long as they become too rootbound before there 8-week flower cycle is complete.
This next group (LST Project #2) going in for a session under the HOT5 are being transplanted from the 3 gallons into 5 gallon shorts to see how it effects amounts come harvest time. I transplanted my Blueberry (LST gone wild from the LST Project #1) into a 5 gallon short and decided to give her an extra 2-weeks in her 8-week flower session to add more bulk.
I have a friend I gave a couple of clones to a couple of years ago and he planted them from the 1 gallon they were in to like a 6 gallon (maybe a 7) and grew some mighty large Ladies in all that acreage, I first thought "what a waste of soil & nutes" being in such a big container.. Now, here I am in similar sized but, I graduted upto this size trying to control the size of the root mass - a hard thing to accomplish in FFOF i've found.
So, now i'm thinking for my future grows as i'm still getting my system of a grow established container size will be 16oz Solo>3 gal>5 gal "short" as the final.
Forgive me for the longer than norm answer..

Have a Great day
don

I have a very hight limited grow and I grow my plants in half gallon hempy buckets. I start them in 1 quart cups and transplant them as they go into flower to their final half gallon homes.

I've had my best luck with 10 gallon pots... I've also had my worst luck with 10 gallon pots. If you are going to go that big make sure the bottom 6 inches or so is all perilite, otherwise they won't dry out at the bottom and create problems later.
3 to 5 gallon pots have also served me well but require me to water more often if the plants are large.
